Also at Charco Largo, Azua.
Santo Domingo.- Within the sage bushes and the mesquites of Higüerito, Azua (south) petroleum oozes out of entrails of the Earth while Dominican Republic imports nearly 50 million barrels each year.
It burbles and casts a strong smell less than 10 kilometers from the site know as Maleno, and lies more discretely beneath the waters of nearby Ocoa Bay.
It has also been reported in areas of San Juan, Barahona provinces, the vast Cibao basin and in the Sanate riverbed, in Higüey.
“In the last 100 years more than 70 exploratory wells have been drilled here. Some have produced petroleum and others have shown indications of the presence of the hydrocarbon,” said Victor Santos Suriel, geologist president of the exploratory company Geo-Research.
The specialist said the Spanish Navy boat Hesperion, headed by scientists of the Research and Innovation Ministry, found natural gas emanations in waters near San Pedro (east) in April, 2009, which indicated that in that marine spot a large concentration of “black gold” could also exist, adding that an adequate perforation would cost nearly US$20 million.
Evidence of crude in the country has spurred Mining director Octavio Lopez and the deputy Pelegrín Castillo to head the drive for more exploration.
Lopez affirms that the most important zones are leased to the local companies Murfin, Maleno and Once Once (Eleven Eleven), but noted that they haven’t conducted important explorations in the last seven years. He said they resort to legal “wrangling” to keep the permits but not make new investments.
For Castillo, Congress should legislate in a way which conciliates the need for crude and environmental conservation.

Give it time. The gov needs to strike a good deal with the oil companies. Gov should look at Brazil's oil deals to mimic.

TonyTunTun,
Brazil is an industrialized country. They were developing and implementing bio-fuel before it was fashionable, and anthropogenic global warming had even been invented. They were determined to eliminate dependence on imported energy. They looked for oil and gas and have now found huge reserves off-shore. The Rial has been stable for a long time now. Economically, maybe Brazil will be the next China?

Come on anyone with a bit of nous and knowledge KNOWS that oil is abiotic and has been demonstated to be made very quickly ; days some talkers I have heard say. Peak oil is a con.And do you think China really depends on this and not "other' technology?

One can reasonably determine the sites have not been completely drilled/explored for extraction because it has not been ascertained a sufficient quantity and quality of crude to warrant the expense.
Wildcat drillers sort of shy away from areas if they don't think they will get significant rewards for their efforts. Thus, no rush to drill for Dominican crude.

Brazil can be the next China but it has taken the country years of stability and planning to get where they are. Nothing wrong with emulating Brazil. The DR is smaller and fewer resources but it has the biggest economy in the caribbean and large pool of young workers. The DR should become more industrialized to survive as the population will only increase and land will become more scarce.

On dear Mr know it all Stone. Although it is suppressed in the english language the Russian/Ukranians have known for decades that the organic theory of petroleum production is against the second law of thermodynamics (enthalpy) and that petroleum is produced inorganically from the earth's mantle and replaced very quickly. This is backed by thousand of Russian/Ukraniun scientists and peer reviewed papers. I suggest you do some research on this and if you have a scientic background, and you try to profess, look at the logic of the physics and chemistry. Yes I am sure plenty of abiotic oil goes into the oceans. The BP problem was complex as Russian techniqued were incorrectly used to increase pressure of the oil. but I expect YOU know all of this.

Greed Grosero and ignoring advice from the experts. The oil has to develop pressure to come up and this is done artificially; bit technical . But incorrectly done or cheaply look at what happens. Then the Corexit used to clean up is worse than the oil ; but it sinks and you see less but it kills off life and affects the gulf stream..Your KING STONE has not has a swipe at me or thanked me for a reponse; does he own this site?

Okay, Wilfred, here's what Wikipedia has to say:
"Abiogenic petroleum origin is a largely abandoned hypothesis that was proposed as an alternative to theory of biological petroleum origin. It was relatively popular in the past, but it went largely forgotten at the end of the 20th century after it failed to predict the location of new wells".
Perhaps you can explain how "the organic theory of petroleum production is against the second law of thermodynamics", and why the Russians and Ukrainians understand this, but no one else.

What is "enthalpy"? Do you mean "entropy"?
Explain to me how, or give me a link as to how, petroleum can be generated inorganically, please.

Ron, Wikipedia has a very good explanation of abiotc oil at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abiogenic_petroleum_originThe opening paragraph states:
Abiogenic petroleum origin is a largely abandoned hypothesis that was proposed as an alternative to theory of biological petroleum origin. It was relatively popular in the past, but it went largely forgotten at the end of the 20th century after it failed to predict the location of new wells.
Like HAARP causing earthquakes, and the CIA masterminding the 9/11 attacks, abiotic oil is a magnet to loonies.
Entropy and enthalpy are both normal parameters in the universally accepted thermodynamic laws of nature. However many conspiracy theorists, creationists and quacks, with no knowledge or understanding of physics, "cherry-pic" bits to support their loony theories.
