Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Cement Producers Association (Adocem) hosted its customary Christmas gathering, where its president Osvaldo Oller stressed the need to create new strategies to materialize sustainable and inclusive growth in the country.

“What we currently require is a deep transformation in the way to do things, we cannot limit ourselves to do better what we’ve been doing until now, and instead  we must identify new strategies to define and reach high-priority objectives as a country. For us there’re three key areas to support sustainable and inclusive growth: education, infrastructure and productive development and innovation,” Oller said.

During the event the economist and invited speaker Eduardo Garcia Michel headed an exchange of ideas on Dominican Republic’s economic perspective for 2012. “I see an economy with great potential for healthy growth, but mounted on the dynamic expansion of the export sector of goods and services. I believe that the core of the economic policy will change to those under the stimulus of the activities exposed to global competition, and that will serve to spur the demand of he other sectors.”

“Common sense shows that after the elections it will be advisable to go to the IMF to negotiate a program that helps the fiscal consolidation and contributes to solve some of the challenges still pending debate, but to be sure, always with the country’s willingness for exert self-criticism,” Garcia said, noting that, “hopefully that’s the last time we’ll need to do so, because it would mean we’ll have acquired the self-discipline we need and the ability to advance to create solutions to the problems before they become serious.”

Cement makers

Oller noted that the companies grouped in Adocem, “have characterized themselves for our innovating proposals, we constantly invested in improving the quality of our products, in research, better guarantees, assistance and service; for the next few years we want to increasingly widen, expand and promoted the good use of concrete and cement in areas where they clearly have great advantages such as it in housing, in the roadbeds for highways and local roads, and infrastructure works.”

Government officials, executives of the various cement companies nationwide as well as associates and opinion leaders attended the cocktail held last week in the M Kitchen Restaurant.

I'm confused. From the big words and grand rhetoric they sound like the United Nations, not cement makers.

I would have thought initiating some standards for earthquake-resistant buildings would have cracked a mention.

Developing new markets? How about rapid-set concrete boots for the Dominican assassin industry?

They're afraid with the fall of the Purple Reich and the Mega Lavanderia, their market will collapse.

They should start operations in Haiti, I anticipate higher growth over there.

Go west, young man.

Are they Dominican? They don't look like Dominicans. Why don't they talk about bringing, these prices down on their cement. They are the white crooks of DR, who are stealing from the poor.

Now we need to hear this same talk from the political and economic elites and more importantly, see through this program for the nation.

"I believe that the core of the economic policy will change to those under the stimulus of the activities exposed to global competition, and that will serve to spur the demand of he other sectors.”

Yes, exposure to global competition via more economic openness will ensure that our products and services remain-and in those areas where they aren't-gain competitive status. You can't hide and protect uncompetitive industries and services

In the long run, tariff protectionism breeds inefficiency, complacency and kills innovation. However industries need some time to adapt to world competition. For whatever reason, some industries will never be world-competitive. It may be worth supporting them for strategic reasons, provided the taxpayer or consumer understands and is happy to pay for it. Otherwise let it go, and focus on what can be competitive and profitable even in an open global market.

Australia's manufacturing sector was decimated when tariff protection was wound down, however other sectors were able to take up the slack. In an ideal world, countries will do what they are best at and trade with countries better at other things.

Just close down the cement factories to achieve sustainability.
It is very easy in tropical countries to make houses out of bamboo, coconut etc.
Realistically non - essential cement needs a 250% tax.
Spurious uses such as shopping malls need to be banned in everyone s interest.
Rail track use a small fraction of concrete compared with the stupid roads they build.
Trashing the countryside. They are stupid if they must build roads - build single track with passing
places. It is is much cheaper.
Just round up the cement manufactures and place them in jail where they belong.
Give the Dominican people a future they deserve without the criminals such as the cement people.
I have met a few - they are total nut cases.

abc200, even better, we can all go and live in caves, and eat berries and each other.

Cement production needs masses of limestone and heat. The Dominican Republic has substantial limestone deposits, thanks to millions of years of coral growth. This country can no longer compete on the world sugar market. Perhaps if sugarcane is used for bio-fuel, it can be used for cement production, as well as for transport, cooking and electricity generation?

I'm not sure if cement and cement blocks are the best building materials in an earthquake zone like this.

Terrace the hillsides and grow lots of bamboo ....... night soil is good fertilizer.
Bamboo houses are great - resist eathquakes well and can be constructed in a week.
No need for caves.....
Cement is yesterdays technology....

despite my instinctive inclination to ignore your idiocy, and abject lack of knowledge, i will simply tell you that all major economic powers have built their economies on protectionism. ALL. the fact that you dropped out of grade school at age 12 does not change that reality.

Reagan appointed Bill Bennett Secretary of Education in 1985. One of the things Bennett said was, "one way to eliminate crime is to kill all black babies", even though more whites commit crime, per capita than blacks. I disagree with this. I think one way to solve the worlds problems and its crimes, is to kill all white babies.

Not according to the statistics - the reverse is the case, even if you class Hispanics as white.
