Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez affirmed yesterday that the Santo Domingo Metro (subway) has become a work of reference for other Latin American countries and a source of pride for Dominicans, and vowed that on February 27, he’ll "take a ride" through several stations of Line Two, now under construction.
The chief executive, speaking after an inspection tour of Line Two’s new transfer station at Kennedy and Maximo Gomez avenues, said he was "extremely impressed and perplexed" with the work. "It’s like being in the developed world."
The Head of State arrived at the Centro de los Heroes (La Feria) station as 5:50pm accompanied by several officials and took the second car, which made its normal stops with him on board, until the Juan Bosch station, where he got into the conductor’s cabin until Juan Pablo Duarte station, and there toured its three levels, which are already concluded. “To have an engineering installation of this quality and conditions is something truly exceptional.”
Fernandez lauded the head of the agency in charge of the Metro, Diandino Peña and his team for the several years of work to make the Santo Domingo Metro, what he called a point of reference for other Latin America countries. "They’ve come here to the country from Guatemala, Panama, and Colombia to investigate how a work of this category has been done to duplicate it in their respective nations."
Peña meanwhile affirmed that on February 27 Fernandez will take the train at La Feria until the transfer station and from there reach Line Two’s 7th station, at Luperón avenue.

well, well, well. a brilliant remark from ateo. what can i say. Leonel´s vow to ride the Metro on independence day reveals the shallowness of the man, a guy with a mind rooted in symbolic gestures, rather than substance. the quintessential egomaniac, who sees development as one upmanship, rather than accomplishment. yes, maybe someone should demand the ridership numbers, but, we all know that they would never be forthcoming.

RonEvane, you said a mouthful. he wants to go down in history as the man who did something, not just for being a competent person. that is why the Metro has to have completion deadlines. he has no interest in education, because that is a slow process, and the advances can be subject to debate. when you build a project like the metro, it is your project. thanks for your kind remarks, Ron. sadly, from all appearances, Hippo will be the next president of this beleagured land, which has enough problems, as it is. any miniscule step forward, achieved by this wayward administration, will be reversed by the Hippo posse. it really bemuses me that the populace would give this bum another turn at the steering wheel, but ,i guess that desperation animates irrational actions. at such a critical juncture in history, when the biggest and the brightest economies are adrift in a sea of woes, the least that we can hope for is competent leadership, if we are to have a hope of navigating these perilous waters. sadly, nothing encouraging seems to be appearing on the horizon.

Wikileaks: Leonel treated banking fraud with a lot of “Slippery Rhetoric”
"SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic.-the Embassy of the United States in August 2005 welcomed a letter from former President Hipólito Mejía on the topic of fraud that led to the bankruptcy to the Baninter, Bancrédito and commercial banks, and gave rise to a serious financial crisis and seriously affected other areas of the economy in 2003."
" Mejía’s document is concrete, comprehensive, sober and well-reasoned", argues the cable from the Embassy of United States."
“At the same time, the American Embassy contrasted the attitude of Mejia with that of President Leonel Fernandez, which notes Mr. Fernandez was hesitant and evasive to deal with the issue of bank fraud, preferring to blame his predecessor for the crisis of 2003-2004.”

Josean, apparently you don't live in the DR. You're posting from the US. I don't know how often you have visited DR, if ever. Since you care so much about our country, I'd assume this is where you want to come and stay, at least temporarily.
When you do come and have to rent a car or a chauffeured vehicle, you may notice that a gallon of regular gas costs over $5.00USD. If you're rich, that may not be a problem. It would be for me because I'm not.
When I get back to east SD, and since I don't own a car there, I'll need to take conchos and the metro
My question: Will you be buying gas at that price or will you be taking the metro? Be truthful.

as far as the 4% for education is concerned, here are my two cents. not only should the money be SET ASIDE, but it should be appropriated, and spent, in such a manner as to affect other sectors positively, through linkages. what do you mean, Dreadlocks? well, why do we import desks and chairs, for schools, from Mexico?yes, guys and dolls, Mexico. a country that imports almost nothing from us.i mean, is that an admission that we do not have a sufficient level of craftsmanship in this country to put together a slab of wood, and four legs? or is it that some politico has a buddy in Mexico that gives him 10% off the top, in return for securing the arrangement? the 4% could have significant multipliers, extending to other sectors of the society and economy. naah. ignore me. i am just fantasizing.

Ron,
You’re correct I currently don’t reside in DR, although I travel there approximately every 45 to 90 days this year I made 9 trips although my average is about 6 a year. Yes, I plan to live there more than in the states although the neo-liberal policies that Atabey loves that have destroyed the world’s economy make outright retirement virtually impossible for the foreseeable future. I own a car there and I have a friend/business partner that drives me around for expediency and safety. No I am not rich, but I find traveling in my own vehicle much safer than using any form of public transportation.
However, Ron living in Gaithersburg, MD ranked as the 25th best place to live in America by Money Magazine with large employers like Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin nearby; it doesn’t seem to me like you are in such financial straits that you have to take “conchos and the metro.”
