Santo Domingo.- The country’s first environment friendly pig farm has been functioning for three months already, and uses their dung and sewage to generate all of the plant’s energy needs.

A 2,000 cubic meter well which mixes the dung with water generates a gas which is 65% natural, to fuel the farm’s generator and for use in its kitchen.

Carlos Porrello, manager of the company Biogenetik, said the biodigestor installed in the farm at a cost of nearly RD$2.0 million is 50 centimeters beneath the surface level and under five meters of water.

He said after the system came online, the farm’s power plant has saved RD$90,000 on fuel monthly, for which he estimates the investment would recovered in 22 months.

“If one of these projects is seen from the standpoint of electricity production, it pays off. If it’s seen as an environmental solution, it pays of and if it’s seen as a factor to lower costs, it can also be reached,” Porrello said, quoted by news source listin.com.do.

Excellent news and these innovations should expand throughout the nation providing DR with a more efficient and productive pig production operation.

If that technology could be applied to human feces, big cities would not have an energy problem anymore.

Good, its about time.

Farmers have been using dried cow dung to burn with wood on cold winter nights.

Also, pick up all the trash in the barrios and recycle what you can and burn the perishables to produce cheaper electric (as I noted 8 years ago). This will lighten-up the landfills.

Also, you need a nuclear power plant to really reduce the cost of electric and sell the excess power to Haiti.

The DR should capitalize more from our neighbor. Haiti has a large consumer base with strong remittances.

Nothing new here, folks.

We have had pig dung fueled government for the past 20 years.

Well I also, have a solution for the reduction of costs for electricity.

A renewable plant that the US is now growing.

Maybe in years to come the DR will catch on.

Like cellular phones, it took a while to come here. Only 20 years.

This is what I've been talking about for months in other posts. Animal and human poop are valuable materials that should not be disposed of and forgotten.
There is such a thing called a "methane digester". That's what this pig farm has installed to generate all of it's energy needs; from powering it's vehicles, as cooking gas, to burning to generate electricity, etc.
The extra bonus with this system is that all the poop, once "digested", or broken down by anaerobic bacteria, makes for a superb fertilizer.
Nothing is wasted and the environment, especially, aquifers are not contaminated.

Science has all the answers to our many environmental and social problems. The solution lies on, simply, educating our people.

This was already done in Mad max beyond thunderdome! Why didn't anybody listen then??? Wait a minute, is the owner of this farm a midget?

The estimated population of Santo Domingo in 2010 was 3,294,385.
If a sewage system were to be built to collect the poop generated by just half its citizens in one day, each person averaging 150lbs, would defecate roughly 2.8lbs. The methane potentially extracted by this amount, would be 6.1 cubic feet of gas per person, per day.
So, half the figure above comes to 1,647,192 persons, Multiplied by 6.1 = 10,047,871 cubic feet. Or 3,349,290 cubic METERS of gas, per day.
The gross heat of combustion of one cubic meter of gas is 39 megajoules, or 10.8 Kilowatts of electricity, times 3,349,290 = 36,172,336 kilowatts, or roughly, 36.2 megawatts per day.

Total installed capacity for DR (2008 est.) = 14.1 megawatts per day.

According to the CIA world factbook, DR consumes 119,000 barrels of oil PER DAY.(2010 figures).
At today's price of 99.41 per barrel, it comes to 11,829,790 dollars spent, PER DAY.
Times 365 days = 4 billion, 317 million, 873, thousand, 350 dollars. PER YEAR.

Imagine what 36 megawatts of electricity produced per day, without using one drop of oil, can do to propel our economy. Assuming we still have to buy a couple of billions worth of oil, What can we do with an extra 2+ billion dollars per year?....You tell me!
