Santo Domingo.- The head of the used auto importers grouped in ASOCIVU on Monday said higher taxes have caused their sales to plummet 50 percent compared with last year.
Alexander Genao blamed that reduction on a change in the valuation system since 2010, which in his view noticeably hurts imports.
He also announced ASOCIVU “Driving Christmas 2011,” from the 15th to the 19th this month in the Feria Ganadera fairgrounds.
Genao added that 70 used car dealers will have more than 5,000 vehicles for sale, with immediate loan approvals.

Here is real reason you gangsters can sell:
DR Toyota 4 Runner 2010 $41,500 US
US Toyota 4 Runner 2012 $32,830 US
And to that add a 20 to 30% down payment at the usury interest rates and you guys are lucky you find any suckers at all to buy your over priced JUNK!

Seems like these guys want to use the lower sales numbers as a way to intimidate the government into lowering the taxes on imported vehicles which would be a huge mistake by the government. I remember when they implemented the DR CAFTA which was supposed to lower prices of American Made cars, but the prices never came down so dealers just pocketed the extra money.
Lower prices to what they should actually be and maybe sales will go back to normal. Otherwise stop crying!

josean ur right on the money
and anthonyc you should just stfu and think twice and a third time in case you missed anything before you say something retarded again while trying to make this gov look good.
the issue at hand is that interest rates at any financial institution in the DR is meant to rape their customers, while in the USA the philosophy they have is to have really low interest rate like 1.9 which results in more sales thus more revenue for the gov and citizens are happy, while in the DR since the gov and bank execs fu** each other every night, they dont control everything hence the reason why banks charge 18 and 20plus interest rates which makes it impossible for average dominicans to buy a car.

Why would you buy a brand new car in DR??
Motoconcho scratches the paint when he passes you at the red light
Huge pot holes
Tight parking spaces that allow people to open their door on top of your door
Concho taxi cars play bumper cars with you
Rocks hit the paint when you go to el campo
Sometimes you have to cross the flooded bridge
Sun is boiling hot and cars start to fade
From: Dominican Republic, calle A.Portes
I think the major reason is that there is a lack of confidence all around the world and people are putting off buying cars for a year or so ,,all very well trying to blame some government decision but in fact , looking at Sper carros, the prices are not too bad

An update on the Neo-liberal consequences in the car dealer story:
Used car dealers on the verge of BANKRUPTCY in the Cibao
SANTO DOMINGO (r. Dominicana).-the President of the Association of Dealers of Cibao (ADECI) stated that the sale of vehicle in the northern region has been reduced in more than 65 percent this year, due to the lack of money circulating, the low purchasing power of people and the high cost of fuel.
He also described as illegal the 10 percent levy on the value of the vehicles which DGA aims to implement on imported units within the framework of the treaty on free trade with Central America (DR-CAFTA) and United States, since the covenant calls for zero tariffs.
The President of ADECI also favored ending the paralysis afflicting the sector by an opening of customs and allowing the import of cars with up to ten years of seniority and not keeps limiting it to five as at present.

If there werent so many corrupt hands out taking money from people saying its taxes for every vehicle maybe some would sell. There is no reason someone shouldnt be able to buy a vehicle and pay to have it shipped here and be forced to pay those taxes. It will never work. The average person simply cannot afford a vehicle here. I know I cant but I do own 2 in the US.

It's really sad. I think, motor vehicle in DR is becoming a problem. The government should take a right decision into lowering the taxes on imported vehicles.

When my wife showed me what cars are for sale on I could not believe my eyes, I always thought that used cars cost a lot and it`s better to buy new cars but now my opinion changed. Well you have to be very careful when you pick an used car but in general they are in a very good condition and don`t need any repair.
