SANTO DOMINGO. - Venezuela ambassador Alfredo Murga affirmed Wednesday that Dominican Republic’s fuel prices don’t correspond with the cost of a barrel of oil bought through Petrocaribe Agreement with his country, a revelation expected to fuel the latest round of nationwide protests by driver unions and community groups.

The diplomat noted however that regarding the demand by social and other organizations for lower fuel prices, it’s the Dominican authorities which set the prices according to the cost of crude in international markets.

Murga said Dominican Republic adheres to its commitments with the Petrocaribe Agreement and expects substantially lower fuel prices will benefit Dominicans in the medium term.

He said Dominican Republic will export construction materials to Venezuela to pay for part of the Petrocaribe invoice, in addition to the 5,000 tons of beans the Caribbean country supplies to the South American nation as part of the agreement.

The DR has been skimming money from the petro caribe agreement since its inception.
Leonel's and his cronies bank accounts have grown considerably since stealing is a permissible crime in the Domincan Republic. No retrobution for theft is the Domincan mentality for lawmakes that steal.

What I find more interesting is that they finance the costs of a bunch of the oil yet the government sells it. We are increasing debt load and I wonder where the money from the cash sales go??

GOOD they Shouldn't jibe with the pact... the lower prices of oil, the more morons in the DR will be consuming a commodity that we don't have and takes only dollas to purchase.

I suppose it matters when the foreign country is financing 50% of the invoice in the long term.

Supposedly, the purpose of the Petro Caribe deal was to ease the burden of emerging countries with regards to oil costs.

Not allow a bunch of thieves to pocket the money and drive Maseratis.

Reading the same news in El Caribe.Com, it Translate to say: "The Venezuela Ambassador in the country, said that the negotiation between the two countries regarding the Dominican Petroleum Refinery will not cause a reduction in fuel prices in the short term" ..... Was this a separated interview for DT? or a bad translation? . See below article in Spanish from El Caribe.

"El embajador de Venezuela en el país, Alfredo Murga Rivas, advirtió que los negocios en la Refinería Dominicana de Petróleo entre ambos gobierno no provocarán una rebaja en los precios de los combustibles, en lo inmediato".

@ AnthonyC, Chavez and Leonel are playing the DR like a fiddle.

As for the Ambassadors' response regarding the disparity, perhaps he was asked a question about the deal, and responded with the terms of the agreement. He may not care one way or the other about what the product is being sold for.

Next up, the blame game for why the electricity service is so bad..........

Looking at the bigger picture......how will this all play out when Chavez and Venezuela inevitably collapses from within. How many eggs does the DR have in this basket??

I think they just need to call it what it is, CORRUPTION TAX.

The DR is accustomed to this long standing tax and accepts it at all levels so.............why not????
