Santo Domingo.- Using the Central Bank RD$10,407 monthly cost of basic staples, the workers who earn the minimum wage would need at least a 23% wage increase  to buy what low income families normally do.

However the nationwide unions grouped in the CNUS will propose to the National Salaries (CNS) Committee a 35% increase on the minimum wage, and discusses an increase for workers who earn up to RD$50,000 monthly through a three-way agreement in the Labor Ministry.

If employers accept the proposed  increase, the highest minimum wage in the non-sectored the public sector would reach RD$11,427, or RD$1,027 more than the RD$10,407 which the Central Bank establishes, and represents low income families.

“We want to propose the wage increase of 35% for the minimum and the people who earn more than the minimum and a 25% increase for those who make up to RD$50,000,” said CNUS president Rafael Abreu, interviewed by listin.com.do..

The unionist says that although the Central Bank figures show that the wage increase should be 23%, they ask for 35% anticipating this year’s projected inflation, which began with higher fuel and staple prices.

Dialogue

Abreu asked Labor minister Max Puig to table a three way dialogue, since the CNS cannot discuss beyond the minimum wage, to reach an agreement that includes wages above RD$8,465.

Not good enough. Low income families should have a 100% increease and 50k and above should have a 35% increase. We have a free trade agreement, lets use it and import food so that our inflation of food prices remain at a low level.

I agree, it's the poor that needs the raises but they also need JOBS! My wife hasn't been able to find anything paying more than 5K a month in the Rio San Juan area. It's horrible!

Those making 50K?? What?? I wish!!

this raise will only benefit those who can keep theyre jobs. the minum wage causes unintended consequences. there shouldnt even be a minimun wage. it just destroys jobs.

Unions do fight for employees interest and they fight for the benefits of those people but, it comes at a cost. Once, the union leaders get paid from a cut or membership from its members directly or indirectly. Unions are not good for capitalist economies for the unions do not fight for the companies existence and can make some companies disappear. Unions are expensive to maintain. Unions have no ideas if the company can afford an increase or no to employees' wages. The best alternative is to increase education so, employees find better jobs and get paid more according to what are they worth.

ZonaDominicana,

May I add.....

I used to belong to two unions, the more you make the more you spent or place it in a savings / IRA / invest / stocks / property it then goes back into system and becomes part of the economy......I'm all for the free market and staying within ones economic means, problem is more is never enough with the belief it's governments responsibility to provide with no incentive for self improvement.

Having said that in my opinion labor unions have become a political labor power tool, being a tool for the Government = hand outs / distribution of wealth / leveling the field / government CONTROL ='s socialism where everybody loses thus becoming dependent on the Government with the mentality it's bigger government's responsibility and obligation to it's citizens.

It's all about CONTROL Gov. / social change or corporate and those willing to be CONTROLLED.

Most people I know have THEY EARNED IT.

I could see minus queens now....
