Santo Domingo.- The authorized auto dealers grouped in Acofave on Tuesday proposed zero tax on vehicles that consume less fuel, as part of the Government’s measures to deal with the crisis spurred by spiraling oil prices.

It said it’s a way for the authorities to send a clear signal which will directly impact the country’s trade deficit.

Acofave said the cost of the first license plate for vehicles of public transport freight, farm products and merchandise must be reduced to a minimum, as well as for short-distance freight equipment transport, since they are capital assets. “These goods are actually being sold mainly with partial or total exemptions and some of that equipment isn’t being registered, which means that the loss of tax revenue would be a minimum.”

It also proposes a reduction to 0% on the value of cost insurance and freight and the first license plate for hybrids, electric or new, factory original vehicles which use natural gas, but not on the modified ones.

Small engine vehicles

In a statement, Acofave proposes a ban on the import of used passenger vehicles which run on gasoline, it their motors are more than four cylinders.

It said the market should make it easy for low income sectors to access those smaller vehicles if they cannot buy a new, noting that it doesn’t make sense to promote an expansion of the number of vehicles with technologies less efficient than the new ones, or high consumption models, or those with six and eight cylinder engines.

The auto dealers added that the country has 2,734,740 vehicles, of which 1,352,720 are motorcycles, or 49.5%.

Another "palo asechao" by the monopoly of new car importers. These moronic suggestions, although in appearance striving for the benefit of consumers, is just another attempt to further monopolize the import of automobiles.
By prohibiting the import of used cars that have 5 or 6 cylinders and that run on gasoline, just furthers their monopolistic strangle on the importation of cheaper used cars by those with modest means.
This new proposal against the consumers by ACOFAVE, should be directed towards the closest trash can, as another monopolistic attempt on consumer rights, by ACOFAVE who already have way too many government tax rulings exclusively for their benefit.
The headline is also misleading, instead of "high mileage" it should read "hybrid".

Technically an excellent idea on the tax however the idiots in power will probably want another license plate fee increase to make up the loss at the other end.

Acofave's would be a good initiative per se.

The government (no more capital "g" sorry, don't deserve it) will emasculate it with some tax in disguise.

Great Idea ! But to make it more credible they should ask for twice the import tax for cars with engines bigger than 3000 cc.

About increasing the taxes so, people use public transportation and reduce the amount of vehicle on our streets? We do not even produce cars. Zero taxes to incentive our businesses not foreign businesses. Zero taxes to education, health, locally produced foods, and projects in benefit of the community.

Patricia... great freaking idea. Lets provide incentives for efficient cars, and disincentives for inefficient ones. But I'd go further! higher tolls for SUVs & luxury cars! Anything to disincentive these gas guzzlers that consume resources, hurt the environment and the macro economy.

Baldoria, nice to see you make the occasional posting. yes, Patricia makes sense with that idea. in 1974, Michael Manley, in response to the Arab oil embargo, banned the importation into the country of any car with an engine in excess of 2000cc. special cases received special dispensation, but that was the general rule. there was a one year moratorium on the importation of all cars, and a similar suspension of all recreational use of motor vehicles, such as the motoring club auto racing season. draconian, yes. shared sacrifice...you bet!
