New York. - President Leonel Fernandez met with business leaders from different areas, who stated their interest in making major investments in the Dominican Republic, including Robert L. Johnson, president of RLJ Companies, which has millions worth of global interests in hotels and finances.

He also headed a separate meeting with members of the Hispanic Investment Committee, of the United States Chamber of Commerce, representing retail chairs, banks, finances, telecoms, hotes, entertainment, pharmaceuticals, waste recycling and services.

Some of the participants have already established companies in the Dominican Republic, while others said they want to learn of the country’s investment climate and legal security.

Among the participants were Douglas Llapen, of the telecom Turitel; David Teller, of Empire Bank; Israel Rosenblum, of the company REPDSA and Abraham Greenfield, president of the company Dollar Phone.

Fernandez touted Dominican Republic’s current macroeconomic stability and institutional vigor, which in his view has become a destination for safe and profitable investments.

The chief executive noted the comparative advantages through the Free Trade Agreement with the U.S. and Central America (DR-CAFTA), the Caribbean Common Market (CARICOM) and other pacts to bolster commerce.

Fernandez’s delegation includes Administrative Minister Luis Manuel Bonetti; Export and Investment Center Director Eddy Martine and the ex Ambassador in Washington Roberto Saladín, among others.

Empty suit liar.

Explain the depth of the corruption and NO justice.

How about this one? “Officers linked to drug deals will be discharged, not charged”
Try and explain that away, f…en moron.

Anyone not knowing the failed leadership of President Scissorhand is impressed by meeting this empty suit. He is, after all, the President of a country. His resume should be pinned to that empty suit of his so that all will know exactly how much corruption he supports.

Now, I see whats going on. If it's not leo's contact, then you can't do business in DR, hence the cement dilemma....

I wonder why no one wants to get close to leo in this picture.

As I have commented here, to have a meeting with the President, you have to pay him a tribute. Like Tony Soprano, it would be a briefcase with wrapped hundreds.

However, these are not the major players he is sitting with in the US. And if they chose to do business in the DR, they have to continue to pay the tribute.

However, my dairy farmer grandfather used to say, "Pigs get slaughtered".

Investments with guarantee ,is what is needed, so as to create employment in DR as well as in USA. People don't realize it but this is vital to the DR economy. Employment is created via foreign
investments there by income tax and revenue to the gvt, providing it is well managed.

Another thing the gvt has to stress to the investors: funding for health care as well as education if they want a tax break. The infra-structure would depend on the gvt from the taxes collected. A good
example is the subway lines to provide transportation for the workers, in form of subsidies as it is
done in NYC,by the operating funds. It would be ideal if it was 25% ryders and 75% gvt, creating an affordable rydership to and from work ,for the poor mass as it was originaly intended, thereby geting people off the streets on bi-cicles, motor cycles, motor conchos, taxis.

This is all uthopian as we all know.Money that falls in the hands of the gvt is money that will be spend among the POLITICOS.

He may be the best ever but that doesn't make him great.
He is a world traveler and decent sales guy.

However, as the Chief Executive Officer of this country, he is a miserable failure.
Look at the health and welfare of it's residents, the fact that clean water and electricity are barely available, the crime and corruption of nearly every aspect of the society and the wanton gluttony of the newly rich. And he is the best? Got to be a more relevant, modern, ethical person that can capture the mood of the electorate more than dumb and dumber.

With so much that is in dire need of leadership, him meeting with the US Chamber of Commerce and some third tier business folks, other than Johnson, is puely a waste.

Lord knows what he and the BET guy are scheming.

I don't know but has anybody look closely at the picture? It just does not some how look like an important meeting of major players, but rather an informal, laid back get together of people with a suit and tie, just throwing shit up in the air.................to see what sticks or falls.

Observe again, it justs seems like somebody kind of got a bunch a chairs, put it is a semi-circleat at a back yard party and said lets buy a case of beer and talk business...........I don't see any serious intent here from either party.

The first thing the DR government has to do regardless of who the president is, is to protect the investor, set legal standards of protection to give them the necessary trust to bring investments into the country without the fear of loosing it all to corruption and arbitrary regulations.

I am sure Mr. Fernandez didnt tell the prospective investors he met in NY the many horror stories of foreign investors loosing their life savings to bureaucracy and endless payoffs of government officials.

The DR has a huge potential, it is unfortunately that they dont see it, protect it and promote it the right way to attract progress

I read that the EEUU offers tax refunds if you go to a bussiness seminar, trip to several countries in the caribbean including Dominican Republic. The best thing is that you don't even have to be specific!

With this info and as guillermone said we get the whole picture.

All these bussinessmen came here for a vacation or Leonel invite him to meet him. He gets to save face and appear that he's doing something, the bussiness men can have a tax refund when they get home (plus with media articles to prove they were ''working'')

He's pontificating to six (6) people who they dragged off the street waiting for a Timeshare conference. NOBODY of any importance.

And just like someone else said, they're waiting for the pizza guy.

What a douche.

martingarata,
I think your description of the wank-fest is accurate - a win-win situation no doubt. Win for Leo's spin-machine. Win for the reps tax-dodge holiday. To bad for DR citizens, US share-holders and ordinary US tax-payers!
Lets keep tabs on the companies listed and see how many actually end up investing in DR having "learn[ed] of the country’s investment climate and legal security" from Leo.
