Santo Domingo.- The Publics Works Ministry and the contractor group BTA nears the conclusion of the Tourist Boulevard of the Atlantic, a set of roads to provide “fast, comfortable and safe” access to Samaná province from Santo Domingo.

The Boulevard consists of the reconstruction of 124 kilometers of road network that link Nagua, Sanchez, Samaná, El Limon, Las Terrenas and El Catey, among other highways in northeastern Samaná peninsula.

The ambitious project also includes the construction of a new seaside road between the community El Catey and the tourist resort town of Las Terrenas, slated to open shortly.

Well Im forced to return and ask the local audience as Im out of life lines on this one , but when this project actually comes to completion , can someone educate me as to where the road actually goes in Samana from Santo D. and how fast and direct the journey is ? Does it mean we wont have to fly to POP anymore if we want to go to Las Terrenas or Las Galleras I hope ? Please give me the details .

Dominicanheartbeat,
The road is essentially completed. I would recommend flying into Las Americas [SDQ] and grab the toll road North right up to the north shore. You will hit the highway about 10 miles East of Nagua. Just make a right and you will be heading right out to Samana.
This main highway which runs through Sanchez into Samana and all the way out to Las Galeras is completed. I was last there in February and only a few spots were problematic. I understand these too have been addressed.
I think the only road section which is not complete is the shortcut route from El Catey out to Las Terrenas. This road hugs the coast and will greatly improve the trip to LT once completed.
The road was built to a high standard with a good substrate, concrete culverts and a thick coat of asphalt. It should last!
The trip the way I drive will take about 2 hours 15 minutes to Samana [the city]. Dominicans will do it far faster of course. Forget POP. This is far faster.

Thanks Las,
Do you know if there is any public transportation from Santo D. to Samana yet ?( e.g caribe tours ).
Also, Ive only been to Las terrenas , can you tell me if in Las Galleras there is any budget hotels on the main drag as in Las Terrenas or is the all incs the only option ? Hey , not to deviate too much , but Im flying into Santo D. in a few weeks . I was originally going to Sosua as always but in light of the raids , shutdowns of clubs and a police state Ive changed my mind . Have you or anyone reading been to Boca Chica as of late that could tell what the scene is like there presently if I decide to check it out ?

Caribe tour does run daily buses to Samana. The problem is getting to SD to catch the bus. There is also a roadside bus stop right at the entrance to the toll highway. That is a far closer to the airport but you will still have to get there. And it is a pretty barren and hot spot to wait for a bus. I was looking into public transport recently and think for me it is too much of an inconvenience. Europcar apparently has some decent rates for smaller vehicles. I like to stay at VillaLaPlantacion when in LG. Just Google it. There is a website.
Also, if you do plan on going to LG, please check out the school we started recently in LG. We call it Escuela Libre. It is a free community learning center. Check out our page on FB. If you have an old laptop you are not using, please consider bringing it. You can find our email on the FB page.
