Santo Domingo.- For British ambassador Steven Fisher investors from his country don’t know Dominican Republic “as they should,” so together with the British Chamber of Commerce, plan several activities to bring industrialists from both nations closer.
Quoted by news source listin.com.do, the diplomat said a Dominican commission will participate in a trade fair in London in September, aimed at exploring possible business deals.
He revealed that an English delegation of politicians and investors will visit the country to review local projects in the area of construction, a group that will also try to agree on a work plan with Dominican pars, to take advantage of Haiti’s reconstruction effort. “We want to get closer. We have a great capacity to invent technology products, renewable energy, communications and so many others. The only thing we must do is bring the private sector here closer to the one there.”
Fisher stated his confidence on the tendency for increasingly stronger bilateral relations.
This month Industry and Commerce minister Manuel Garcia will present to the Britain-led Commonwealth the Dominican territory’s strategic advantages as a platform to reach the Caribbean, Latin America and U.S. markets.
The business gathering is slated for next Sunday in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, with the participation of representatives from the Commonwealth’s most important productive groups.
Dominican Republic-Great Britain trade relation began to receive a great push 25 years ago, when the British Chamber of Commerce managed ties between the private interests of the European power and Dominican businesses.
One of its founders, Fernando González Nicolas, said in those 25 years the Brits have contributed to bolster the Northwest’s banana exports; the country’s entry into the Lome Convention trade pacts; the local electrical sector’s capitalization process, and the entry into the Caribbean Community, a market of more than 16 million consumers. “Great Britain is one of our main trading partners and there’s still much to come. The relation will continue improving.”

AC,
All their comments point to a short-sightedness that impedes DR's modernization and development. IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE CORRUPTION AND MISMANAGEMENT in DR guess what, Foreign Investments ARE THE WEAPONS against those two maladies that plague our nation.
It's via an insurgence of private capital and management that the people begin to equip themselves with the wherewithal and knowledge that the deficient populace needs to modernize and develop. Keeping Private capital and knowledge at arms length is the worse possible solution to our mis-management and corruption. DR NEEDS huge Private capital in order to move forward her modernization process. To discourage people from investing in DR is to side with the worse offenders and sanction the worse monopolistic tendencies in DR.

Who are we kidding??
The British HAVE BEN NUMERO UNO THIEVES throughout history! They are the biggest smooth operator pirates!
Don't forget how they paid their Pirates of the Caribbean to steal from the Spaniards, OUR ANCESTORS, and how they burned and rob DR?
Don't forget what they did to India.
The British has VAMPIRISM tendencies, socking the lives and live hood of whoever they get closed to. MARK MY WORDS, STAY AWAY FROM HTE BRITISH, nos chuparan y nos tiraran como bagazo de caña.

Yes, the English have a lot to be ashamed of about their history but we are more well behaved these days. How about the Haitian workers in the sugar plantations now. Hang your heads in shame the lot of you!

With our recent expenses scandals the delegation of politicans could certainly learn a thing of two from their Dominican counterparts on how to do it properly..

WE are not babies nor unable to defend our interests. What you refer to has happened but guess what? The World doesn't stay fixed and if one were to go back far enough I'm sure EVERY strong group has done in another. Also, strong groups don't necessarily stay strong for ever: note Haiti. She invaded and dominated DR for 22 years! So have some confidence today.
DR needs to stop its highly damaging attitude that they can some how stay beyond modernity and yet reap the benefits of the same. Not every Dominican can count on a monthly stipend coming from aboard! The nation needs to address its serious underdevelopment and foreign capital is an essential part of the solution.

What the Dominican industrialists MUST do is create a type of small business organization that provides low interest loans and business education to the small businesses in the Campos and rural areas. These micro loans can help these merchants to improve sanitary conditions, give a facelift to their building locations both inside and outside the buildings/houses.
Back to the Brits, all the Brits want if to bring their massive alcoholic beverages, make our population more alcohol dependable, get liver and kidney diseases, then they can shove their medical products on us.
Our poor Dominican people, lately it seems the powerful nations wants to make us more consumerism freaks.

El Dready,
Having trouble reading, too? Drink some strong coffee and stay off the bongs. You're long time passed that stage, Man.
What I've said: DR suffers from corruption and poor practices. How to address DR's problems? DR should encourage more Foreign investments and better practices=> less corruption and better management of resources.

Atabey, sometimes i think that you post to amuse us. if you do not, the you are the victim of the law of unintended consequences. you have got to be the dumbest guy alive. foreign investment will help decrease corruption and mismanagement. holy jeezus...that is what is known as putting the cart before the horse. no, Atabey, this is how it works....you get rid of corruption and mismanagement, and foreign investment will come. people who invest do so to make a profit. if the business environment jeopardises that strategy, because it is inefficient, corrupt, and antiquated, the investors will go elsewhere. man, talk about a dunce.
