SANTO DOMINGO. - Despite  the four month drought that parched Dominican Republic in the first six months this year the Plan Quisqueya Verde (green), together with the private sector, planted five million trees in different provinces.

Though the drought kept Quisqueya Verde from planting a higher number of trees, seedling production did advance in its different nurseries nationwide.

Quisqueya Verde said despite the climatic situation plant production increased to 8 million trees by the end of first six months this year.

Wow! If this is just DR they'll have to plant something on the order of 50 million trees on the western part of the island. I wonder what the attrition rate is for these plantings? Probably high. Good to know this is happening and hopefully continues, as there are many areas in need of replanting across the DR.

They won't keep up with Haiti's chalcoal demand, but is the right thing to do.

You must keep up effort, even if you have to replant due to low survival rate....it is our only way of recovering fauna. As for charcoal makers, shoot to kill might be only answer. Remember, that once we turn the island into a desert, the process might be irreversible, at least within a couple of generations. As industrious and intelligent as the Israelis are, they still live in a desert-so we clearly would have no hope. Think about it!

I don't believe this. Doubt they planted 5 million trees... Think about it does it sound practical.
