NEW YORK. - Dominican Republic today placed a US$500 million bond in the international markets that mature in 2021with a 6.95% yield, prompting offers of more than US$3.0 billion just hours after announcing the transaction.

The yield is the lowest in Dominican Republic history, according to a statement quoted by news source iariolibre.com, and comes just months after top raters upgraded the country’s risk ranking

Treasury minister Daniel Toribio headed the Dominican delegation in charge of the transaction, accompanied by Central banker Héctor Valdez Albizu, among other officials.

Junk Bonds. You will never see your money maybe you will get an interest payment but nothing else. I don't beleive that over $3 billion dollars were offered. Either its a misprint or someone is lieing.

I have a great idea. Let's spend it on WiFi service.

Oops.We already got screwed with that:

Former Minister of Youth Manuel Crespo says that when he left the post in 2008, the Ministry WiFi network was working, but it was up to his successor, Franklin Rodriguez to continue the project. Diario Libre has reported that the WiFi system is not functioning, despite the Ministry announcing it was a RD$70 million project. Crespo said that the RD$70 million announced for the project in 2006 only RD$2 million was spent on the public Internet network. He said the money was used to purchase 3,000 computers, and to fund scholarships. He said the plan was for the City Government and the Dominican Telecommunications Institute to take over the project, which never happened.

Don't worry. They will think up a new way to steal all our money.

JimH ..yes it was only the amount above that was offered and it was a very good result and the rate is better than most latin countries and other countries with about the same development level ...so credit where credit is due ,It was a very good placement . I hope the government is not tempted by the offers to lend more at this point in time...

Present value of Debt 2009. In DR it's 22% as a percentage of GNI,

http://www.gapminder.org/world/#$....smi=2.65$cd;bd=0$inds=i62_t002004,,,,;i109_t002004,,,,

Net barter terms of trade was at 97% for DR in 2009. Again, the interesting thing to note is the trending: DR's Up( consistency at about 97%),

In international economics and international trade, terms of trade or TOT is (Price Exports)/(Price Imports).

In layman's terms it means what quantity of imports can be purchased through the sale of a fixed quantity of exports. An improvement in a nation's terms of trade (the increase of the ratio) is good for that country in the sense that it can buy more imports for any given level of exports. The terms of trade is not affected by the exchange rate because a rise in the value of a country's currency simultaneously lowers domestic prices for both imports and exports.

The graph above represents Debts to foreigners by public and private as % of GNI for DR. From 1970 - 2008.

Those are excellent news about the placement of the US$500 million in bonds. Looks like there are more foreigners optimistic about the future of the DR, than a lot of the people that frequently post in DT, criticizing everything and anything about the DR.

Juanb,

It's not that we don't have to worry about corruption and we do NEED to fight it vigorously. It's that no modern economic system can operate without DEBT management. As the graphs above will direct you, the DR is not outside of its ability to pay for these bonds. If used correctly and yes, Dominicans will need to demand that these funds be used accordingly, the DR stands to make better progress. The name of the game is to grow the economy so as to be able to manage the debts. All nations have to do this. We can not stop using loans to grow our economy for fear of corruption. We must do both, GROW THE ECONOMY and FIGHT CORRUPTION.

Dominican woman arrested for illegal breast enlargements in New York

(Reuters) - A New York City woman was arrested on Friday on charges that she performed illegal breast and buttocks enhancement procedures in her home, sometimes charging more than $1,000 for injections of liquid silicone.

According to court documents filed in Manhattan Federal Court, Whalesca Castillo imported liquid silicone from her native Dominican Republic for her underground practice at her home in the Bronx.

According to the court filing, on at least one occasion, she warned a client who fainted after the injections not to seek medical attention, saying the hospital would not help her because the procedure was illegal.

Although silicone is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for cosmetic use, the injection of liquid silicone for cosmetic purposes is prohibited
