SANTO DOMINGO.- Fuel prices will plummet as steep as RD$10.87 per gallon starting Saturday, Industry and Commerce minister Manuel Garcia announced Wednesday, two days before prices are official posted by the Government.

The official, who spoke to the press after meeting with president Leonel Fernandez, said a gallon of premium gasoline will fall RD$9.76; regular RD$10.39; premium diesel RD$10.77; regular diesel RD$9.38 and propane gas RD$3.89.

The reductions will take premium gasoline to RD$227.34 per gallon; regular to RD$210.31; premium diesel RD$192.73; regular diesel RD$187.72 and propane gas RD$104.17.

The announcement comes after days of mounting pressure by wide sectors of the country that demand government compliance with the Hydrocarbons Law, and lower the fuel prices.

But Fernandez defended the handling of the Hydrocarbon Law and said fuels haven’t increased enough in proportion to international oil prices, noting that it led the Government to accumulate a debt of more than RD$2.0 billion.

Wasn't Leonel preaching to the world that lowering fuel prices will help reduce costs on essential goods such as food? Yet here he is defending hikes in his own backyard?

WTF!!?

What a joke of government and supposed democracy. The people need to take to the streets in protest, no different than the UK, Egypt, Oman, etc... Bet you'll never see it in the US though, but eventually people will wake the f$#^ up !

The govt. is motivated to keep the fuel prices high because they realize massive amounts of tax revenue because of the inflation generated by exagerated fuel prices.

Hig fuel prices raises the tax revenue on every single product and service sold.
