Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic plans to install $770 million worth of wind facilities until 2015, and to reach that goal would attract investments by buying energy at prices higher than offered in most of the region, CTA/Bloomberg reports.
It said wind developers would be encouraged to invest their money in the Dominican Republic, as the government is proposing more than double the electricity price charged in other Latin American countries such as Argentina, Brazil or Peru. “Two European companies are in the Dominican focus as well: Gamensa Corp Tecnologica SA, Europe’s second largest wind-turbine maker, and Grupo Inveravante from Spain will join the construction process.”
CTA/Bloomberg, quoting Fraser Johnston, an analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance, affirms that if successful, Dominican Republic “would be beating lower-tier EU countries.”
“By connecting 350 megawatts worth of wind farms to the grid within four years would dwarf efforts by Poland (270 megawatts in six years) and Bulgaria (343 megawatts in seven years),” it said, adding that the government of the Caribbean nation wants to obtain 25 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020, up from currently 12 percent. “The EU itself has committed itself to a share of 20 percent from renewable energy sources by 2020.”

Obviously, these investors have not considered our payment history.
On the surface, this sounds like good idea. However, I remain concerned that, even in our corner of paradise, wind energy can only be construed as supplementary, as electricity can only be produced efficiently on demand. If we go for any period of time without appreciable winds, then there is no electricity, a scenario that could hinder industrial growth-an ideal we must pursue at full speed and get away from tourism and AIR's.
Perhaps, in addition to wind energy, we should also consider solar plants and wave power generation. We have no significant fossil fuel or natural gas resources, so we either start feeding all Dominicans a steady diet of "habichuelas dulce", or begin to find energy sources abundant domestically.
While we are at it, let's study Singapour and generate a 10-20 year plan emulating them. We could do it-if would effect a paradigm shift and cultural revolution.

Pay double for energy supplied by windfarms.
The damn government in the DR dosen't pay for what it is getting now.
Leonel is a bigger idiot than I originally thought or now he is grasping at straws just to see if he can get his little pork chop elected as VP.

The good thing about wind power is that it can be last into the future.
Technology exists to reduce consumption.
Solar power is also important.
Every electric motorbike can charge when the wind is blowing!

pay double what other countries are paying to atract investors, sure and at the end who will end up been overcharge, the consumers, !? how does this make sense the idea is to help environment and also produce low cost energy!?? oh well

My somewhat selfish concerns would be the location of the turbines. I lived in Palm Springs when the trend was to build them and they were unsightly and noisy. If they are located anywhere near tourist areas, less people will choose to come to to DR and then less revenues. Cabarete comes to mind as it likely would attract those interested in wind energy. But the benefit of the renewable energy will be more than offset by fewer kite surfers and tourists in general. There might be a way to do it correctly if this is thought through. Such as, the type floating on water, far from view of the coastline.

No it can't.
Once the wind blows that is it....Poof....It's gone. Unless you want to cover the entire island with batteries! Then when the wind doesn't blow........Your F*cked!

That pretty much sums it up. A poor country with no money will spend more than it needs to so a few can feel good about themselves,

BobHDR; did you remember a few years back that the environmentalist opposed windmills because they killed birds?.....we are over that now....lets find solutions and yes..drill baby drill for natural gas/

Any contractual deals that rely on renewable energy will greatly benefit DR in the short and long term. Obviously, the more energy produced, the greater potencial for manufacturing goods for export, hence, a better standard of living, hence, more money for beer. No?
