Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.- The Dominican Milk Producers Association affirmed Sunday that their sector is submerged in a deep crisis, near the brink of collapse, on dwindling profits, shrinking markets, no incentives and a lack of clear rules in massive powder milk imports they say affects them, during a three day gathering in a Punta Cana resort.
Association president Eric Rivero said no government authority, beginning with the Minister of Agriculture, has yet to proceed and seek solutions to the concerns of the more than 200 subsector leaders across the country, who cited difficulties and demand of more financing for livestock producers.
The dairy farmers, who participated in the activity titled “The future of Dominican land: dialogue with the presidential candidates,” said bank norms limit access to credit by farm producers and does like to lend to farmers, on claims of risky investment and that farming is at the very mercy of nature.
They also warned that the Agriculture Ministry has to reform, since most the budget is spent in personnel payment.
They complain of what they consider the existence of two ministries: one that’s seen in the media and the other, which is agribusiness’ reality. They added that there’s a lack of security, since thieves take advantage of any negligence to steal in the plantations or rustle cattle.

It's stupid - DR has a tiny army and military police.
Switzerland has 280,000 in the army for the same population.
Now wonder there is theft etc.
Double the size of the army and military police with a sub-station every 20 miles. Children in school need military training. They can then keep watch on their neighborhoods.
Expanding the army etc. should have number one priority - its no good expanding the education budget if when the children are 'educated' their property is just stolen by bandits.
150,000 would be a minimum size for military and military police.

The market for fresh milk here is very small and the quality of fresh milk is very poor so if I was a milk producer I would not be too excited about the future ,,,I have seen maybe a few bottles or cartons of fresh milk in the supermarket but very little , On the other hand butter and cream and cheese has better chances of producing a profit for the farmers .

In a country of nearly 9 million, there should a huge market for milk and milk products.
These are essential foods for everyone, especially children.
They should be part of the school system's breakfast and/or lunch program, if they're not already.
The physical health of the people and the economy depends highly on agricultural products which the gov't, at this time, doesn't seem to be caring much about. Pity.

Ron Evans ,,it seems that most people here drink the milk in packets that lasts for months and yes Roberto Jose , I agree that you need reliable power but that does not stop meat being sold in the street with no refrigeration .
I note in most supermarkets that there is a huge variety of cheese available but usually only 3 or 4 cartons of fresh milk on the refrigerated shelf ..

These people are making money hand-over-fist, it is their nature to gripe
about the profits.

RobertoJose:
You're absolute right. Without electricity, It would be hard to keep milk and other perishable products from going bad.
This is yet another reason why reliable power is so vital to the prosperity of this country.
If a market can't keep a product fresh for, at least, three to four days, it would be risky business to offer it to the public, in the first place!
Reliable electric generation is vital to our country.... But why am I stating the obvious?

Before spreading powder Milk to Hotels, it is necessary to add STREET LIGHTS and SIDE WALKS!
Cows can not see well at night, and there are so many jeeps, so it is very hard to walk down the street.
Then you can adjust your Milk prices, and start making a capital profit.
Also, Milk production is very similar as Montenegro tee:
You put your head under the tee bush, mouth up side down, and wait for the rain.

I was able to drink milk almost every other day for three months straigh jurney in my home town! And let me tell you my experience the person who collected the milk and brough it to the the town at 5:30 AM by 6am he was sold out. People prefered 20 time to purchace fresh milk than the one on the store. The milk in the stores are over price and the quality is not that great watery. You will obtain more vitamins and and the ritual of getting the fresh milk evey other they and knowing were this milk came from was priceless and I paid per bottle of milk 12.50 to 15. and will also get 3 bottles for 35 DR$ In my home town mean while comercial products you find yourself paying 55 for imported or criollo DR per 2 watery "whole milk" botlle! Milk never get wasted or spoil in a Dominican home unless you don't know how to prepared. And I'm not avoiding the electrical issues that we have. But... to many imports and to much inflation from our "criollo" product is not good.

If local are making profits with bottle of milk 12.50 to 15. DR$ imagine how much industrial and imported are making from our people at 55 DR$ . Thats not right... and before I came back the costumer cosummer reports reveled that industrial locals have cheated on the size of portion served on the butter juices and milk and the list could go on and on and on...
