Mal Passe, Haiti.- Haitian leader Toussaint Louverture’s historical statement “the island is one and indivisible” as the pretext for his troops to invade the eastern portion of Hispaniola island in 1821 materializes 200 years later, at least at the southwest border.
The swelling Sumatre (Azuei Lake) has erased the line dividing Haiti and Dominican Republic, as their waters submerged the marker pyramids built along the border points between the two nations, with only number 239 still visible.
The lake also threatens the villages “La 39 and La 40”, two communities of Haitians in Dominican territory, where inhabitants live off the sale of the charcoal they take to Haitian territory aboard sailboats.
The swelling of Azuei’s 115 square kilometers has also destroyed plantations of Dominican farmers and threatens to spread to communities as far away as Tierra Nueva.
Since last year its waters had washed out the highway which links the town Jimaní with Haitian territory, which prompted the Dominican government, with the support by local businesses, to raise the highway nearly two meters. Across the border the Haitian authorities did the same.
But the lake still grows and has submerged the Customs, Immigration, Agriculture Ministry and the offices of other Dominican government agencies.
Ovidio Dotel who runs one of the companies and is head of the Binational Market Retailers Association, said they’ve already spent around RD$25 million in landfill in this place, without a solution in sight.
“Look where we are, in a second floor. We were down there and now that has been buried,” said the merchant quoted by news source listin.com.do.
The lake’s continuing growth is forcing second transfer of the government agencies, now being built on the higher grounds south of Jimaní, where Caribe Tours and Terra Bus also erect their terminals, in addition to others that ply the Port-au-Prince transport route.
The Dominican Government also provided lands for many Haitian vendors to build their warehouses or install their containers to transport merchandise to Port-au-Prince.
Further into Dominican territory there’s also the concern that the water of Azuey, located 55 meters above Enriquillo Lake, will eventually reach the basin hastening its swelling, blamed on the soil’s lack of moisture retention, lost to decades of rampant deforestation.

Hmm, f !! That's a problem. We can never be one country, that just can't and will not happen! I don't know what's the environmental issue here, but we need help from experts to stop the problem (real experts not the pretend experts we have).
From: United States
The last line in the final paragraph of the article sums it up clearly. This is a man made environmental disaster, deforestation created by communities of Haitians nationals who make charcoal as a way to earn a meager living. If we continue to allow the gradual, non-chalant, haphazard entry of undocumented Haitians into our territory, we will also have the same destiny as Haiti occur to us, the eventual slow destruction of Dominican territory as something that although preventable, will soon be inevitable.

I've said it countless times before - The rising lakes will eventually divide Haiti and the DR.
Don't fill it, profit from it.
This will enhance fishing, boat tours, provides a vast water reservoir for irrigation of nearby wastelands, and creates a natural barrier to immigration from Haiti to the DR.
It will bolster boat rides providing trafficking of guns, drugs, money and people to and fro. Get ready (DR) if you're serious about combatting these problems.

Solution:
Pay the charcoal producers $1 per hundred to plant conifers 250m deep along the banks of the rivers.

There must be something going on deep down in the Earth. Perhaps an earthquake has opened up some type of natural water resevoir and now that is feeding the Lake causing it to grow. Question is how much will it grow. Underwater resevoirs can be MASSIVE.

What the %&£÷! Why are there 2 communities of Haitians (legal immigrants?) In Dominican national territory cutting and burning our forest with impunity. How the hell was this illegal and destructive economy allowed to flourish? I am beside myself with outrage.
If I were the President I'd send the army to that locale, round everyone in that town and put them to work raking, planting trees and watering the soil for a whole year. Then send them packing. To hell with the opinions of the international community. These people are going to turn our green land into a brown desert like they have with their homeland. At least they would have 3 square meals wile they replenish the forrest they cut down.
Kman, cous is there any effort being made to educate your people on the harmful effects of cutting trees to make charcoal? They are in DR territory illegally and they are destroying the environment.

venganzaderafel,
Hahaha, you're right man or girl, dk! I definitely feel for illegal immigrants, as in my school we've met some Mexicans and Salvadorians that are illegal in the US, and they were involved in the big Iowa raid two years ago, but man, we need to get rid of those illegal immigrants. Especially those destroying the land. We can only let educated people into our land, or people that are going to the DR with the purpose of bettering themselves, either come as students, work (professional work, not gluing bricks together) and stuff. Enough with the laziness, these people popping kids like bunnies and sending them to our streets to beg for money. WTH, they need to be in Haiti sitting in a classroom, that's the job of a kid... studying!

venganzaderafel,
Before i answer you can you please write in entire Kiskeyaman!
I am the child of the island!
with your army you want to force what persons to work the land? Haitians or Dominicans?
You dominicans hold for responsable of your problems the haitians.
But you don't think if a thing is possible in your house is because you have a lot of people who accept that! a lot of DOMINICANS cut and burn tree with the haitians! think about your people too!
'Kman, cous is there any effort being made to educate your people on the harmful effects of cutting trees to make charcoal?'
You also must educate your people in first. In Haiti a lot of people cut the tree because they haven't got another way to cook their meals! maybe they are illiterate but they're not stupid! they know that!
soon we going have a new army, in Haiti, the firt aim of this army is to protect the haitian without upon against your army, the second is to protect the border, in three is to protect the envir

I am referring to whoever is caught cutting and burning the forest, both Haitians and Dominicans. If this is the only way they have to cook an effort from international organizations in addition to the Haitian and Dominican government must be made to supply and subsidize alternative source of cooking fuel. The ramifications of their present practice is soil erosion which leads to desert and mudslides, loss of life (human and animals) and more floods.
We are losing large areas of land on both sides of the lake and both sides of the border.

environment is one priority of MARTTELLY!
In haiti we have since few months a lot of purpill who planting trees and watering the soil!
Now we have a plant to rebuild the army who going to plant trees and protect the trees! I going to demand that the persons in the jail go also plant trees.
The problem in the other side of island is you think, the haitians are a group of persons who sleep.
Is true we have some lazy deputies, but all of the populations, a lot of person who work in the parcks try to organise a lot of acts for improve the situations!

I am glad to hear that. Now only if we can get the Dominican government to do the same. I think it is a great idea to have prisoners plant trees instead of letting them have cell phones in jail.

Haiti will self destruct, implode from within. There is not even the slightest hint of hope in sight, no faint light at the end of the tunnel. At this point in time, we simply see nothing on the horizon that would inspire a sense of confidence, some sort of positive expectation and fufilment towards a future good.
Irrepairable ecological damage to Haiti has been done with clear evidence of miles and miles of barren waste land and to solve Haiti's catastrophic environmental disaster will take a life time.

That is your opinion and not a truth! What you write is what you hope for this country! But if not you see nothing what mean nothing is to do in this country! we have a new leader who do everything to change this country, and he have a skill team with him.
Stop to announce negative thing only! stop to repeat yourself, i think everybody here know what you think about this country, now give the chance with a new person to say something positive!
Sorry for you, haiti have all knowed but haiti is not destruct, and a lot of enterprise come to invest now! even your countrymen come to invest in haiti specially at petionville.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA stop to play in a field you don't know!
A lot of person is coming to invest! The eartquake have killed a lot of person but its open the opportunity to have more invest in haiti.
From: United States
Well I hope for the sake of Haiti you are right Kiskeyaman. But I just don't see it happening and like I said before, what ever reparations to make things return to normal will need more then just a few year. It will require a very, very long time before we see any real concrete results. I mean just look at Pto Prince, the earth quake was almost two years ago and the city is exactly the same, not much has changed, not even the government building after its colapse has been rebuilt but rather remains still on the ground totally destroyed.
So tell me where do you see hope? I sure don't. You need you to point it out to me because I am having a hard time making a distinction. I mean one hotel in Petionville is not much of an inspiration. Nevertheless, I don't wish anything bad for Haiti or anyone. A prosperous Haiti is good for the DR. But it makes no sense to mince words, to sugar coat things, make it appear less worse then what it is. It is best to say it like it is and face reality.
