Santo Domingo. - The electrical sector surpassed the goal of 2.0 million paying customers, as the Standby Agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) requires, the State-owned Power Companies (CDEEE) revealed Sunday.

The goal was to reach 2.15 million customers and the distributors surpassed that figure handily, reaching 2,162,770.

The CDEEE announced that Maria Altagracia Pabón, 63, a resident of the sector Bello Campo, Santo Domingo East, was the 2.15 millionth customer, CDEEE CEO Celso Marranzini, and East Distributor Company (EDEEste) general manager Francisco Leiva paid her a surprise visit to award her with an electricity-efficient set of home appliances.

Question ... Is it safe to assume that an equal number of people are not paying for electricity and also that large numbers of 'white collar corporations are also not paying?

If so this is a good development. DR needs to get those moochers out of the cookie jar and A.S.A.P.

If a nations with so many poorly educated citizens is going to subsidize a sector, it should be basic K-12 education! That will increase the human resource base of the nation providing for a better, more prosperous foundation to build the country.

In our area pay about $12 US per month for electricity, regardless of consumption. The number of paying customers is meaningless. The government spends far more on subsidizing electricity than on education.

In the poor areas around the Free zone where my business is located, they are installing new meters everyday, as well as replacing the old style of wiring, and dismantling all the spider webs you see on every post.

In the past, people didn't pay because the service was so bad. It's not so bad any more, and every day, gets better.

This is not a problem that is easily solved, but it IS being solved. Anyone that knows Celso, knows that he will get the job done. He is upfront and honest in all of his dealings.

I have to wonder just who made the count? A number is only a number without a responsibility to be honest is proven..

Just how many will be paying in the near future; marks yet another expense that the poor cannot afford.

How about splitting the ON and OFF hours of service to the hours the service is most needed. The often 7-8 hour lag between charging cycles is destroying my inverter batteries.
