Santo Domingo. – Several senators of the ruling PLD party yesterday warned they’ll not endorse an amendment of the Labor Code which eliminates the suspended layoff period and other benefits.
Santiago senator Julio Cesar Valentin discarded the approval of any legislation by the PLD or from Congress affecting workers’ rights, as business groups have proposed regarding the layoff suspension period.
The lawmaker clarified however that he’s not aware of the employers’ proposal. “We wouldn’t defend anything that means jeopardizing employment and the workers.”
The also PLD senator Dionis Sanchez, though recognizing that the business leaders have the right to their view, said the workers shouldn’t be stripped of their rights.
The Pedernales province representative affirmed that the PLD controlled Congress would never agree to something which harms the working class and on the contrary, the decisions by president Leonel Fernandez as wells as lawmakers have always been to benefit the majorities.
Big business
The businesses grouped in CONEP have reiterated the need to amend the Labor Code, for in their view improve the national productive sector’s competitiveness, guarantee the creation of more formal jobs and higher contributions to the Social Security System.
They said their proposal is based on the fact that 68 cents of each peso paid in wages form part of the labor load tax, which is distributed among the Social Security, the reserve funds for prior notice of layoff and suspension of worker aid, bonuses, vacation pay and medical leave.

I'D BE INTERESTED TO HAVE SOMEONE TAKE HE TIME AND DO THAT CALCULTION FOR ME. AS I READ IT ONE PESO IS ACTUALLY 1.68..????
