Santo Domingo.- The Green Bay City Council has approved a proposal to forge a relationship with the country’s second biggest city, Santiago, greenbaypressgazette.com reports, adding that it’s “pursing a new sister city relationship,” with the major agro and industrial urban area.

It said the city of Santiago “is home to 2 million people, a tropical climate and professional baseball and basketball teams,” although its population has yet to reach 1.0 million, while the entire province is likely around 1.1 million.

“Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt supports the move as a way of promoting economic development and trade opportunities,” greenbaypressgazette.com said.

Perhaps we Santiagueros will entertain collaborative efforts in the cheese and beer areas of expertise. But all these openings to boarder interchanges are good for the people of DR as they engage the outside world as never before. Modernity dictates broader outreach and engagement.

These "sister-city" relationships are of no benefit to citizens. They are just and excuse for rate-payer funded exchanges (read holidays) for counselors "committees and delegations" in some exotic location. Wisconsin - what better place to get away from this time of year. Santiago DR - what better place to get away from any time of year.

I've lived in Green Bay for a short while. Pretty in Summer, Arctic-like in winter!
Santiago, my birthplace. Always beautiful.

Don't mess with Cibeanos Roy, you are crossing the line. We are not like the average Dominicans you see in SC or most of the Republic. We are highly progressive, have pride and a strong sense of civism. At this one time only, I recommend you refrain from intentional or non-intentionaly irony. This is a warning: "GOVERN YOURSELF ACCORDINGLY."

Highly progressive? Just not very original when it comes to thinking of a name for the city, it seems. Thanks for highlighting my post, anyway.
"a tropical climate and professional baseball and basketball teams," - is they the only distinguishing features of the city? By progressive you mean shopping malls? Yes I have actually stayed in your Santiago, and the one in Chile. Now there's a distinctive, progressive city!
Over to you, guillermone, but I will have an early night - I'm off to Higuey before dawn and hope to see Jesus at the Basilica there - it's his big day.

RoyStone if you would just google a little bit and kill some of your ignorance before posting and not backwards, it would have been OBVIOUS that Santiago, Dominican Republic was THE FIRST ONE FOUNDED on the americas, BEFORE 1500 and first tried to stablish on 1495, EVEN BEFORE Santo DOmingo, SO WHO COPIED WHO???...

Santiago, Chile is THE CAPITAL of Chile, not the second city of chile, which by the way has A LOT MORE PEOPLE than we do.

Is funny that you have been every inch of the planet earth, there is not a place you have not been...LOL

airgordo,
Thank you for politely assisting me with your history lesson. I must be wearing my orthopedic shoes, because yes, I stand corrected - Your Santiago is about 45 years older than the world-famous one in Chile. I don't recall saying your Santiago copied the name, or that I have been to every Santiago, or every inch of the planet. However I would guess I have been to more countries than you, although that's probably not saying much. I have not been to Africa. However I have stayed in your and the Chilean Santiagos.
Okay, so your Santiago is older, but what has it achieved? Of course the Norte Chico civilization in Chile predates Columbus and the Tainos, and some might say was more civilized that your Santiago has ever been. Sure, the Spanish were torturing, enslaving, killing and spreading diseases (the worst one being Catholicism) amongst the original inhabitants of your Santiago before they did in what is now modern, civilized, world-famous Santiago. So what?

Yes, xwill7, you say that Santiago DR is great, but apart from saying it 3 times, you couldn't think of anything to verify your statement?

roy,
Everything that you can find in another city you can find in Santiago except a subway. It does not matter because I rather be in a vehicle with super cold AC.

xwill7, everything - really?
Perhaps you can tell us where the great, world-class Santiago harbor, freeways, railways, opera-house, botanical gardens and museum and historic buildings are?
