Santo Domingo.- The power company EGE-Haina and the Spanish firm Cobra Energia signed a contract to build the second stage of the wind generation park at Los Cocos, a 14-generator, 25 megawatt complex inaugurated October.
EGE-Haina general manager Tito Sanjurjo said the second stage will triple the site’s installed capacity, with 26 additional turbines manufactured by Gamesa, which will generate 52 more MWs.
He said the expansion is projected to conclude in December, when Los Cocos will have 40 wind generators to produce 77 MW of energy, enough to supply 150,000 homes.
He said Los Cocos’ second stage will save the country 500,000 barrels of oil per year and prevent the emission of nearly 200,000 tons of CO2 annually.
The expansion of Los Cocos, next to the Quilvio Cabrera Park site, both located in Juancho, Pedernales, will link it with Enriquillo, Barahona.

Does the cost include batteries and inverters for when there is insufficient wind?

Birds??? Are there any birds remaining in that area. I think that most have been killed and eaten by the locals, or poisoned, trapped or killed as they eat the fruit/vegetables of local campesinos planted crops.
This wind farm will help, but certainly only be as a supplement to the base load. Wind farms are only built in areas that provide the proper winds. Unfortunately, usually those areas are far from population centers.
I am certain EGE Haina will maintain the units per the manufacturers recommendations. They are after all, a well run operation.

I think I'd prefer my chances in a country with a properly-built earthquake-rated modern nuclear power plant, (not at or near sea-level) than under 460,000 120-meter high wind turbines, if and when the next big one comes.
As for the storage of waste, the artificial-basalt technology has been proven safe. Or we could leave the uranium in the ground, in its porous shale load-stone, that can leach into the aquifer, even if we don't know its there. I'll go with using it then storing it safely, thanks.
Don't worry about half-lives of thousands of years - humanity will wipe itself out some other way long before then.

As for dogs, I'd have to agree with AnthonyC on that one. Dogs probably kill more cats than birds, so on that score would have a net positive effect on the environment.
Only fools own cats anyway.
The safest, most economical and environmentally responsible option is still nuclear. There is also a strategic benefit in not giving money to Islamic countries for oil.

On megawatt means one million watts of power.
A megawatt hour is the amount of power used if 1,000,000 watts are used for 1 hour
In other words, Mr Roy, in order to consume one megawatt, a household would need to run a 500 watt device, without stopping for 2,000 hours, or 83.3 days. Entiendes?

I'm a tree-hugger but wind turbines don't make me feel warm and fuzzy. Nuclear power done properly, does.
On the CO2 AGW thing, I'm not convinced that some increased CO2 is bad. There are arguments for and against AGW so until I see more convincing evidence or arguments either way, I will remain agnostic.
However my friend the tree tells me he would like more CO2 which means more photosynthesis and growth, and higher temperatures which also means, in general, more rainfall.
Maybe my friend the coral reef is not so happy, but he'll probably be dead and gone from pollution before AGW, bleaching and reduced pH from more CO2 gets him. Just look at his dead Dominican coral reef friends.
