Santo Domingo.- The Central America and Dominican Republic Industrial Chambers Federation (Fecaica) is concerned with citizen insecurity and tax policies in the region’s countries, which in its view makes it less competitive compared with other countries of the region and even outside it.
In a gathering held in the country, FECAICA’s members discussed the sector’s situation in the area and established some common rules to improve the competitiveness of the industries in the zone’s countries.
They also pledged to collaborate to mediate and resolve conflicts in foreign trade that surge between producers from their countries, and identify special customs and tax formulas in each FECAICA country, to propose those which could be included to their governments, within the Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement.
The business leaders also issued a document stating their concern for what they view as a lack of security in the region.
“We want to state our concern for the weakening of citizen security which represents an obstacle in the social and economic development process, inasmuch as it reduces the quality of life of the individuals, increases public spending and hinders the possibilities of increasing productivity and competitiveness, in the local as well as in the international market,” FECAICA said, adding that “an uncertain country becomes less and less attractive for investments.”

Just talked with a local restaurant owner...who were, by surprise, presented with a government bill for $20,000rd just to stay in business. The business listed on the paper (bad photocopy) was not even right, although the address was. When they said they could not afford that...he came back the next day with the same paper...reduced to $5000rd.......75% less!
Think of how many foreign investors and business owners fall for this BS government corruption.
I have always thought...lead by example...it is obvious that many Dominicans follow the lead of the government here...corrupt, unaccountable and shady at best.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news, antonio1. the most recent Global Competitiveness Report, 2011, ranks both Honduras, and Jamaica, higher than the DR in the matter of competitiveness. if the DR wants to climb the charts, the first thing it has to do is to get rid of illiterates like yourself, who, obviously, inure to its detriment, simply by being so ignorant.

What does that picture represent? An undercover bust? Or, a guerrilla attack? Por favor, step into the modern times. What's with a half uniformed policeman doing with a high caliber rifle? Is he hunting? Hunting for crimmies? Or, for a Water Buffalo or Rhino, you know big game?

Perhaps you are not aware that Argentina and Chile are part of Latin America?
Their murder rates per 100,000 are only 5.5 and 1.68 respectively, compared to the Dominican Republic's 24.0

Well the gun that the dumb ass cop is carrying is a Iver Johnson M1A Carbine in .30 cal which is a longer 9mm but has just a little more power not by much but is a good urban weapon. It was used buy the US Airborn Rangers during the 2nd world war due to being lighter but not as powerful as the M1A Thomson 45 acp.Still a cheap way to out fit the unfit to serve cops in the DR. It's all surplus US Military stuff. That goes to show the money and brand new arms that the US Gov. Give the DR with the defence aid they steal the cash and give then the old crap.

English is my second language and I frequently make errors. Now having stated my disclaimer let me say that I live here in DR and often wonder if the problem with the police were impoved would tourism increase?
DR is known for the corrupt police. I see it every day. Frequently my fellow Santiagueros are stopped for no reason. Police ask for money. When not given we are taken to precinct and held for 2 or 3 hours and then released.
Across the board LF has permitted this to happen. It is not a secret.
Just recently the police killed a resident of La Joya. Orlando was no saint and was not a good citizen BUT the police frequently take the law into their own hands.
Most are not educated, most are barely literate, most come from extreme poverty and see the uniform as free license to rob steal and be corrupt just like LF

when you can drive from the capitol to Puerta Plata and not see a single policeman the entire trip is disturbing. Trucks that were scrapped in the US roam the roads at speeds well above the posted speed limit with poor brakes and worn tires. No one can stop those who run the red lights because the police drive up and down the roads with lights flashing to warn the crooks they are there. They never stop just do a U turn and drive the other direction why is that? My girl friend was robbed at gun point on a city street and identified the robber after looking at mug shots. The Police reply was oh yes he is a bad man and we have had many dealing with him. If they know who did it why not arrest him ? The next question is why she had to pay the Police to take the report ?
