Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez will ride the Santo Domingo Metro’s (subway) “quake ready” second line next February 27, and will cost dominican taxpayers US$800.0 million dollars once concluded.
Diandino Peña, head of the agency OPRET, which oversees the subway’s construction made the announcement Wednesday, affirming that the chief executive will in take the subway at the Centro de los Heroes station to the one at Kennedy with Maximo Gomez and from there to the one at kilometer 9 on the Duarte Highway, and from there to the final station at Padre Castellanos Bridge (La 17).
He said the subway cars will begin arriving at the start of February and that the work should conclude by August.
Quake ready
Peña affirmed that the subway’s structure is ready to support any type of earthquake, for which the population shouldn’t lodge any concern with the 13-kilometer long mass transit system.

VeronicaDR, Be reasonable. When did this or any country last have a magnitude 12.0 earthquake? The biggest earthquake ever recorded was the Valdivia earthquake in Chile in 1960, at 9.5
Safety design criteria is usually based on withstanding the probability of an event within a certain time, like 200 years. It's not absolutely safe if it can't withstand a direct hit by a giant asteroid, which theoretically can happen, but is so unlikely it's not worth worrying about.
Santo Domingo will be totally flattened before any earthquake collapses the Metro.
