Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Government on Thursday announced that the country’s economy grew 4.5 percent in 2011, boosted by exports, a figure senior officials called very satisfactory and above the average for Latin America and the world.

The announcement came after a meeting headed by president Leonel Fernandez with his economic team, including Central banker Héctor Valdez Albizu, and the ministers of the Treasury, Daniel Toribio, and of the Economy, Temístocles Montas.

The three officials stressed the economy’s growth and stability, and noted the Free Zone sector’s 20 percent jump in profits.

Valdez Albizu said despite gloomy projections by independent economists and the political opposition, it was the external sector which motored the economy’s growth, because for some, the global crisis would affect that segment.

He also revealed that the exports grew 29 percent and imports 13.6 percent, or nearly half of 2120.

Dropped from 7.8% to 4.5%

Why are you surprised? 7.8% GDP is a rate that is untenable for any economy to maintain for any significant length of time.

GDP is a useless tool, when used to measure the economic health of a nation. it has long since been regarded as a waste of analysis. that is why other groups of meterics, such as the Human Development Index, were developed. as one wag said, "GDP can no more measure the health of an economy than it can tell the time".

Josean - thanks for the link. As I was reading the DT article, i was wondering what was the predicted growth for 2011, and your link help clarify things a bit. 4.5% is not bad, but if we were predicting higher and if we planned for higher, than 4.5% is not necessarily a "victory." It's akin to a company not meeting profit targets. But the fact that we grew @ 4.5% is positive news. My further question is, how was this growth distributed among the population? did transnational corporation reap most of the bnefits? In which case that "growth" has been expatriated already. Or, did the corripios and vincinis benefited disproportionately more from the growth? b/c that would just mean that inequality in the country has increased.

In other words, it's fine to claim that 4.5%, or any growth, is positive, but let's dig a little deeper and see how that growth is actually benefiting the lives of average people either through direct benefits or improved public services.

actually, Baldoria, that is exactly GDP is a useless tool. it is only a measure of final sales. it is like a cash register. it can only tell you how much money was spent, but it cannot tell you how much was actually spent on each category. simple example....let us say that we have a radical outbreak of crime. people are afraid to leave home, and thugs are murdering innocent people for a pittance. so, government spends millions of dollars on defensive consumption, buying weapons, hiring more officers, and taking other measures. private citizens have to buy all manner of burglar proofing, just to stay alive. sure, the GDP goes up, but at what cost? or, let us say that the production of a mineral goes up. we export more, and the dollars contribute to the net exports category. however, GDP does not take into effect the externalities which could arise from mining. it does not examine the health hazards that could arise from the use of toxic chemicals in the process
Written by: dreadlocks, 6 Jan 2012 10:08 AM
From: United States
it does not calculate the cost in future illnesses, and possibly death, which could be occasioned by the process. it does not account for the possible permanent destruction of disposal sites, and future uselessness. it only takes into consideration the amount of money spent, not how it is spent. finally, since government raises its revenue by taxation, fines, levies, tariffs, etc, that section of the calculation is not economic activity. it is activity at cost, not at price. add to that the fact that it costs money, mostly borrowed, to finance government spending, the GDP is a waste of analytical time.

Now to the business of fixing the economy

The Jamaican economy after the elections

By Al Edwards

Friday, January 06, 2012

WITH the general election now clearly in the country’s rear-view mirror, a collective effort must now be made to grow the economy and improve the lives of all Jamaicans. For decades the Jamaican economy has exhibited anaemic growth.

According to the World Economic Outlook published by the IMF last year, Jamaica will have the seventh slowest growth rate in the world up to 2015. Over the last 30 years, annual gross domestic product growth in Jamaica has been less than one per cent. Therefore the first item on any new administration’s agenda should be how it intends to stimulate growth.

Ron , you are, unlike Atabey, an intelligent human being. if you want to continue appearing that way, then siding with Atabey will just make you look less than you are. you know a man by the company he keeps. anyone who believes that GDP is a worthwhile measure of the strength of an economy needs some classes in basic economics. Mr. Dread.
I looked up your link and got really confused with the report, citing growth consequences and morality issues....I understood the definition of GDP and learned that it's not a true indicator of a country's REAL economic growth.
So I thought that a better indicator might be a nations' population's percentage living below the national poverty line. Which is defined by the CIA as being $2.00, or less USD, per person, per day.
I was shocked to find that DR's is 41.1% in 2009 figures.
The figure for Jamaica was 19%, (2000).

Darn! I wanted DR's to be better than Jamaica's!!.. Excuse me while I go make me a highball....shit!

Guys excuse me for this long post but I think we can ALL enjoy this startling information:

"What does it mean when Americans make up half of the world's richest 1%?"

FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

When I read these numbers I was stunned. I had no idea that Americans make up fully one half of the world's richest 1%.

When you look at the world's population as a whole, it only takes $34,000 a year per person - after taxes - to be part of the world's richest one percent. A family of four with after tax income of $136,000 would be among the world's richest.

60 million people make up the world's richest one percent. And, according to world bank economist Branko Milanovic, half of them - or 29 million people - lived in the United States as of 2005.

Another 4 million live in Germany. And the rest are scattered throughout Europe, Latin America and parts of Asia.

None of the world's richest 1% live in Africa, China or India - statistically speaking.

None of the world's richest 1% live in Africa, China or India - statistically speaking.

Although places like China and India are seeing economic growth, and people there are getting richer, they're starting from a very low base. This also means the emerging middle class in these countries isn't the same as the middle class in developed nations. No cars. No retirement plans. They don't own their own homes.

Milanovic says people in the world's true middle live on around $1,200 a year.

Which means even the poorest 5% of Americans are richer than two-thirds of the entire world. Something to think about.

While the Occupy Wall Street movement targets the so-called 1% with protests in New York, Los Angeles, Denver and Washington.

These numbers give one percent a whole new meaning."

Josean,
from reading many of the posts on this site, one could conclude that Dominicans are descended from Tainos and Spanish, whereas Haitians are the descendents of African Negro slaves.
The reality is they have more in common with each other, even their history, than either care to acknowledge. Had Spain not found her Central and South American Colonies more useful, Haitians would be speaking Spanish now, not Creole. The problems of Haiti are similar in nature to the Dominican Republic, only worse.

The point as you say is not to agree with everyone but to hear everyone out and to DEBATE, not to try to censor.
The INTERNET is the most anti-censorship invention the world has known since Guttenberg invented the printing press. To try to practice any form of censorship on the net is extremely dangerous for those in the world that believe in democracy. It’s the last line of defense we have for true free speech. Look at our Arab brothers and sisters imagine what would have happened to them if they wouldn’t have been able to get the message of their fight for democratic rights out to the world via the net.

No one can argue against fanatics with an agenda. The refusal to acknowledge tangible, unbiased and unadulterated truth, in the face of reason and logic, has to, tragically, be the one and greatest barrier/deterrent to learning/evolving, humanity has had to contend with, throughout history.

Yeah, you're right, Mr. Josean. I stand corrected. "controlled substances" such as Marijuana and an occasional "toke" of coke has lastingly altered my perception of reality. I now think the origin of the universe and time dilation is "child's play". . a, "no brainer" ..I think I have an answer to every complex perplexity in question concerning who we are and why we're here! "why" is the main question, but I get no answers!.. I'm so confused!!

This growth seems pretty consistent with the IMF forecast, back in September 2011...

"Despite an unexpected deterioration in the external environment, overall macroeconomic conditions remain favorable. While there has been a deceleration in activity, the economy is growing at the healthy rate of about 4 percent. With less supportive external conditions, the growth projection was reduced to 4-5 percent for 2011 (from 5-5½ percent before). Inflation continues on the rise, mostly driven by higher commodity prices. Headline inflation reached 10 percent in August (y/y), but it is expected to fall to 7-8 percent by the end of the year, and to 5-6 percent in 2012 as monetary conditions remain tight."

continue....

“The recent fiscal actions adopted in mid-2011, such as the tax measures, the tighter supplementary budget and the adjustment to electricity prices put the fiscal objectives for 2011 within reach, including the consolidated public sector deficit of 3 percent of GDP, although some further refinements in policies are needed."

What is your problem with HAITI.
DR make the same figure As HAITI. Haiti grow his PIB 4%, inspite lots problem we have. for me is a good figure for haiti my country because after the eartquake, we have lost a lot of persons and enterprise. one year after we make a good figure. but for your country is diferent because you don't have eartquake, you have all enterprise, but the figure is not a good figure, you make almost the same figure with a country which knew a very big and killer earthquake.
and once again I see you and your countrymen can not stop mentioning the name of Haiti in your bulsh*t.

Mr. Kiskeyaman. I want to apologize to you if I sounded anti-Haitian, because I'm not.
I referred to Josean as being an anti-Dominican because some Haitians hate our country. (for good reasons), and I thought he (Josean), may be one of them.
Just like you, I don't want anyone bashing my country. Mr. Josean, under the guise of being dutiful to his cause of exposing wrong and other shit, ....has made my country a pariah and a place to be ridiculed as the Bozo, clown of this world!

My apologies, KISKEYAMAN, I thought you were referring to Haitians born in the last 100 years, not those who have been dead and gone long ago - like those of French descent, who once made Haiti the richest colony in the New World, not the poorest republic it is now.

Kiskeyaman.
You've got the wrong guy. I don't bash your country nor belittle your people. I think Haiti, if given a fair shake, can rise up to most other Latin nations. It's just a matter of time, money and perseverance.
I also think we can live peacefully on the same island and benefit greatly from improved commerce and closer relations. ...It all depends on the persons in charge of our governments.
Martelly seems to be someone who truly care and knows what he's doing. Hopefully, our next president, Medina, can turn out to be as caring and capable as martelly is.

The dominicans spoke all day to do trade with haiti but they want have all avantages of this! Martelly will take actions to balanced the commerce. Haiti will succeed if lot of vampire don't continuous to kill our labour!
Ronevane, it's not only the haitians who have something agains DR. Even the Dominicans I meet here in Haiti tell me the prefer live in Haiti than DR. I tell you that not because I am Haitian.

Kiskeyaman ... A young Canadian businessman went into Haiti shortly after the earthquake and had great initial success. Although the link below sounds negative in fact he achieved a great deal and may be able to make a try one more time.

Incidently, I helped organize 3 Haitian humanitarian teams 8 days before the earthquake with the help of three Dominicans. The husband and wife team are still feeding dozens of Haitians living in the bush on the side of the road near the border ... and I thought I was doing something big when in fact a much younger man was doing even more ...

Which just goes to prove that if you want to help then just go do it!

Kiskeyaman ... I guess my message is that lots of us off the island love all the peoples on the island and who cares what language or color that anyone is ... all humans have equal rights as humans and from my Canadian perspective, as long as I act like this in business, then business should be good for everyone. Canada wants Haiti to do well, but the situation is so tough on the ground and has been so for so long that no matter what is happening the situation is only going to improve when an economy is established that provides jobs and these jobs are sustained.
