Santo Domingo.- The Dominican government plans to ask the United Nations Development Program for (UNDP) to conduct a study on mining’s impact on Loma Miranda, prior to taking a final decision in the case.

To date the Environment Ministry has yet to state its official position on the controversial contract signed with the Canada based Xstrata Nickel Falcondo, for open pit mining at Loma Miranda, part of the Central Mountains.

Environmentalists, senators from the adjacent provinces Monseñor Noel, La Vega and Duarte, bishops, farmers, business leaders and local politicians have spoken out against mining in the area, citing its importance as a source of water.

Xstrata defends the project, calling it environmentally viable and a generator of wealth for the Dominican Republic.

In a Web forum in the Santo Domingo State University on Sunday, Government officials discussed the decision to seek the UNDP’s help, with the participation professors,

Something similar was previously done with the failed attempt to build a cement plant in the buffer zone of the Los Haitises National Park, where the UN’s study recommended canceling the project.

If the ministry needs the UN to do their job for them, then sack the ministry. Maybe out-source the judiciary, military, police and even the presidency too?

The gist of the matter here is "a generator of wealth for the Dominican republic's plutocracy".

If you ask 'mother/father' UN you undermine your own claim ot nationalism. They will then start to decide and at some date to enforce their plans upon you. The never ending Haitian question springs to mind. Who - what individual in what department of government invited their decission/opinion. That individual should be canned (with not pension) for treason.

If you need help from the UN to do anything than you are sick in the head. The UN is a group of people who are not elected by anyone but want to tell the world what to do. Solve our own problems and keep these UN as far away as possible. If you can not figure out the problem than you need to be replaced.

To my understanding they are looking for an impartial gvt boddy which we don't have in DR . I think
it is a good idea to bring in the UIN.All the UN personnel is going to do is call it as it is,since there
is not commision to collect or kick back as LF did. This is the function of the UN !!
Martin:
What good is having elected people in place since they don't represent shit ,but to become as rich as they can while in office.Sell the entire country while they make a healthy bank deposit in FL.
DomRat:
If you remember well it was not the DR gvt that called the UN in,in the Haitian case but a frustrated
Haitian group and the priest at the border, who backed them up all the way to the UN
Jeanarenas:
It's very easy for you to say it is to generate wealth from your Colonial point of view.I don't see that
happening in PR,or is it that the Gringos will not let you?

The UN is an expensive, inefficient, left-wing bureaucracy. However it would do a far better job of governing this crime-ridden island than the corrupt Dominican and Haitian governments.

One think about elected people running the country you can kick them out. When the UN is running the country it is run by some special interest that you can't do anything about. The UN is just another word for the new world orders goons.

True but it does not cost the people salaries as high as the inefficient present or past gvt.for better
results.
