Santo Domingo.- The major labor unions on Monday joined the growing rebuke the government’s tax package legislation, and said despite the removal of staple items included by error, called the proposal inflationary.

The unions CNTD, CASC, and CNUS warn of protests together with the people if the government does not seek a comprehensive reform based on consensus which increases its collection capacity and not by applying new taxes and widening the taxable base.

In press conference, unions spokesman Jacobo Ramos said the tax reform proposal which they discussed with the Economic and Social Council wasn’t included in the government’s version presented on Thursday.

He said although they are willing to talk and cooperate, the unions call on civil society and business to also participate, but reject the increased sales tax and the one on fuels, from 16 to 18%.

Ramos said the government has to increase it capacity to collect, as the Internal Taxes Agency (DGII) has acknowledged, that around 26% of the sales tax isn’t charged.

The unions also propose the elimination of tax breaks on vehicles, the lawmakers’ slush fund known as the “little barrel,” and apply spending cuts.

So no one wants to pay their fair share of tax. How surprising! Dominican patriotism - all about talk but not about action.

I think before allow the patient to undergo surgery it would be prudent to do some preop testing, like a MRI!

josean,
There are many things that I pay tax for that I don't agree with. However in a democracy that's how it works. You get your say at election time then after that you must abide by the majority decisions, even if you don't agree.
I don't agree with a very progressive tax system either, but that's what we have in Australia. As I have sand many times, you get the government you deserve.

Roy,

So you're against having a forensics accounting before we give these Narco criminals more money!

I thought accountability was also how democracy worked?

Absolutely, josean
But democracy has never "worked" in the Dominican Republic with PLD, PRD or whoever, and there has never been accountability and probably never will - it's art of the "me me me" attitude.

So Roy let's starting with accountability by demanding and accounting before we consider 1 cent of New Taxes!
