Santo Domingo.- While president Hugo Chavez handily won the election in Venezuela, in the Dominican capital suffered a humiliating defeat, according to figures from the South American nation’s embassy.
It said an overwhelming majority of its nationals living in Dominican Republic voted for Chavez’s rival candidate Henrique Capriles.
Of 675 Venezuelans registered to vote locally, only 492 cast a ballot, of which 376 went for Capriles, or 76.42 percent and 113 picked Chavez, or 22.97 percent.
The Venezuelan embassy added that only three of the cast votes were null and 72.2 percent of the Venezuelans living in Santo Domingo took part in the polls.
Partly from his generosity through the Petrocaribe oil deal, Chavez enjoys wide popularity among Dominicans.
