The North-South highway won't be finished a quickly as planned.
Santo Domingo.- Economy Minister Temistocles Montas on Monday said the government will adopt austerity measures to cut spending by as much as RD$60.0 billion (US$1.53 billion) , or around 2.3 percent of the GDP .
In response to demands ??by some sectors, such as the National Business Council (CONEP) that the government must cut spending prior to submitting the tax reform package, the official said around RD$48.0 billion in capital investment will be immediately cut.
He said nearly RD$5.0 billion in funds allocated to the energy sector will also be cut, and around RD$3.0 billion less for goods and services. "We’re saying that the austerity measures which the government will implement will mean from 55 to 60 billion pesos next year."
Montas said the diplomatic and consular corps will be rationalized this month and the issue of deputy ministers has already been solved, because the law is being complied with stipulates no more than six in the various ministries.
He said despite the fiscal deficit, the country's economic condition remains stable because there’s neither runaway inflation nor exchange rate.

The reality is there are over 400,000 superfluous public employees that have been hired by the various corrupt PURPLE administrations, particularly during the last 8 years.
The problem Saint Danilo faces is that if he gets rid of these "bottles" he will have open rebellion not only in the streets but also inside the PLD.
Lie-onel's unprecedented thievery and mismanagement of the economy has painted him into a PURPLE CORNER!

once again, Josean is right on the money. the horse has already bolted, and locking the barn door will serve very little purpose. Danilo is going to run into some deep crap. why do you believe that Leo did not start these IMF negotiations? because he knew how painful the prescriptions were going to be. the coward created the mess, and left his successor to clean it up. the sad part is that if he ran for President, the sheep in the DR would again vote for him

Danilo has no program. unless you are living under a rock, you should realize this.. as long as he wants an IMF loan, it is the IMF that is calling the shots, not Danilo. wait till after Christmas, when the devaluation kicks in...then the fun is going to start, in earnest. by Christmas, the dollar will be 39.25 to one.. the christmas influx will stabilize it at around 39.15. then, after the holiday crowd goes home, KABOOM!

NO!
In a democracy you must be vigilant 24/7/365 and hold the feet of the elected officials to the fire!
In the Dominican Republic with a democracy that suffered a stillbirth in 1963 we must be hyper-vigilant!

Make the cuts and move on with the taxation adjustments. Our taxation policy has long been due an overhaul. Modernity dictates that nations pay their way, and if you want development and modernity, then getting your fiscal health-AND that includes taxes!- in shape is a must.
Will Medina tackle that albatross called the electricity and fuel subsidy regime? Eventually, DR needs to get that albatross brought under control and MINIMIZED for good.
Basta Ya!

NO NEW TAXES until we have a full forensic transparent review of ALL resources and revenues and how they have been spent buy an internationally respected forensic accounting firm!

This move shouldn't surprise anyone-it was inevitable.
Much too much foreign capital was borrowed to support LF's insatiable appetite for erecting structures, building roads and bridges and other similar projects.
Things are nice and make the country look artificially beautiful (I prefer natural beaches and mountains and landscape). Problem is that we were living beyond our means and are unlikely to be able to pay our debt back. I further suspect that many of these activities were simply proposed for the enrichment of a few cronies, and not necessarily for the greater benefit to society at large.

glomar, no disrespect intended, but i have concluded that every government action here is designed to achieve one thing, before all others. that is to line the pockets of politicians. how can it be, in this day and age, that IT service quality has worsened over time? yes, service is worse than when verizon had it. why? because all the government guys wanted was to get the deal done, as painlessly as possible, and grab their comision. they apparently did not put in performance clauses, so, what claro and orange have decided is that since the government did not demand service quality, they will not offer it. so, what do we have? no investment in equipment for years. the result? not enough bandwidth for the customer base. so, in the DR, despite the glowing talk about development, and economic growth, we have the WORST internet in the region. Orange internet was decent 2 years ago. today, it is worthless. i will not waste time discussing Claro.

thanks, Glomar. as usual, the respect is mutual. to put it simply, Leonel maxed out the credit card, and Danilo is looking for the money to pay the collections agents.

Glomar, to show the disregard that people like Claro have for the Dominican people, here is a simple example. until very recently, if you needed to add minutes to your prepaid cellphone, you had to scratch off a card, and enter the numbers, manually. now, you can do it electronically. the reason i mention it is that other islands in the caribbean have had the modern system for years. we are just getting it now.
