Santo Domingo.- Foreign Minister Carlos Morales on Monday paved the way to what could become the country’s most ambitious payroll cut ever, when he said he favors reducing the number of diplomatic and consular employees ,noting that as a member of the private sector he also agrees with curbing government spending.
The official however didn’t specify how many diplomats the country has.
Morales's statement comes after a meeting with president Danilo Medina and a UN Haiti Stabilization Mission (MINUSTAH) delegation, and just a few hours after Economy Minister Temistocles Montas announced a reduction in diplomatic and consular payrolls this month to curb government spending.

In these tough economic times, the country must pare down its diplomatic corps to the bare essentials.
In the grand scheme of things, in diplomatic circles, we are not really that important. We really aren't. We are a small country, with meager economic and other resources. That is reality, no matter how nice our metro might be.
A country with its hand perpetually extended out looking for economic aid, should really desist of diplomatic excesses.
While we are at it, reducing unnecessary personnel and cost, we should also consolidate communities and decimate congress. Most are useless anyway, and are unlikely to be missed. It is utterly ridiculous that a country of meager resources would have some of the highest paid congressmen in the world, and some of the most corrupt and inept, as well.

I disagree with closing the embassies around the word. Nor a re-structure process should be done for all the embassies.
For example: why there is no Dominican-Arabic business trading !!?? The Dominican embassies in UAE, Qatar, Jordan steal your money just to stamp or legalize any official paper by them. One of the embassy ask for US $400 to just stamp the paper. This is kidding.

This is the problem with trying to reduce government spending, every sacred cow has a constituency trying to save it from being slaughtered.
We have always read about how disproportionate the Dominican Republic's diplomatic corps is relationship to its size as compared too much larger countries, but now when even the Foreign Minister admits they are not necessary suddenly they are indispensable!

We should think of the situation as if it were our family budget. We need to live within our means, separate want from absolute need and stop or get rid of everything else. Since we cannot print money or borrow from the IMF, then we would have no choice but to make some sacrifices. Yes, this would make sense to me.
Since our bloated military is ineffective, then we should perhaps consider consolidating it to a level commensurate with our real needs, or maybe even follow the Costa Rica model. Wtih such reduction, we could afford a professional force, with minimum requirement of high school diploma and passing entrance proficiency and physical tests. For junior officers, minimum requirement should be two years of college in criminal justice. For senior officers, the requirement must be a master degree or higher.

Only the cyclonic loony would advocate such an extreme policy adjustment. While we can and should better control expenditures aboard by consolidating marginal embassies, etc., we should keep in mind that DR can not function in the new world as in the past. One positive outcome of the PLD Era has been the vast broadening or recognition of the DR internationally. Before the rise of the PLD, DR was poorly known internationally. The previous occupants had done a very poor job of PR internationally.

Once again, through all of the blur and static noise of lunacy, wisdom surfaces in the wilderness from articulate and rational commentators like glomarexplorer and Atabey. In one example, the former admits honestly that as a small country, the DR is not a major influence in the development of world events. He, rightly, suggests that diplomatic budgets should be pared down to within the means of the country relevant to its influence on the world stage, while acknowledging the importance of such diplomatic missions; supported by another comment about living within our financial means (“We should think of the situation as if it were our family budget”). Atabey clearly understands the importance of diplomatic missions in his contribution to the dialog, pointing out that the “DR cannot function in the new world as in the past.” While all agree that budgetary cuts are necessary, all recognize that in order to exist as a modern state in a global economy, the maintenance of diplomatic missions
From: Dominican Republic, Santiago
The DR has gained significant foreign investments from around the globe as a result of its diplomatic initiatives. Atabey even provides an anecdote of the DR mission in Prague (which by the way is a beautiful city). While it is popular to ridicule all public servants, there are those who serve the true goals and needs of the people. And they do so without the glamour and accreditation so often attributed to government positions.
Final analysis: keep the diplomatic missions; slash the budgets as necessary to reduce waste and as glomar states gut the unnecessary and ineffective military. What the hell is this country doing with such a sizable military anyway?
