Santo Domingo.- Nobel Chemistry laureate Dr. Mario Molina on Friday hailed Dominican Republic’s efforts to banthe substances which harm the ozone layer and the atmosphere.

The country presented the accomplishments of its National Ozone Program in Geneva, Switzerland, which successfully led to lower consumption of the three major ozone depleting substances: Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halides and methyl bromides, and banned the use of all those substances that impact that layer of the atmosphere.

Molina’s recognition came during the 24th meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol, which oversees the efforts to remove the substances that harm the ozone layer and the atmosphere.

The Dominican delegation, headed by Deputy Environment minister Zoila González Gutiérrez and Ozone Program coordinator Elijah Gomez, stressed the joint efforts by the government, international organizations, industry, experts and other relevant groups to promote the Protocol in the search for new alternatives that ensure environmental sustainability.

Urgent Protocol

The Protocol’s signatory nations were also encouraged to continue its constant and unwavering compliance, given scientific information showing that the hole in the ozone layer has reached unprecedented proportions and it’s recovery is still far beyond the horizon.

Well maybe they should start regulating car emissions more as well as other pollutants in small and big cities if they want to protect our health, environment and atmosphere so much!

Drive through the rice fields near Bonao and look at how the mountains in the distance are covered with smoke. I have said this before, but if you want to stop the harmful, disgusting emissions from motor vehicles would be very simple. Let the Police pull over a polluter. Attach a hose from his tail pipe and run the hose into the cabin. Mark the drivers license with a notice that the hose has been attached. Let him breathe the crap that the people behind him have to breathe. He will be in the shop that evening. If he gets pulled over again and has disconnected the hose himself, which you will know by the mark on his license, throw him in jail. If the population here ever starts to believe that there are not only laws here, but enforcement as well, they will start to obey the laws. Till then we will have what we now have, complete chaos.

synapse,

The garbage with plastic and the burning open dumps all over the island are 1 cent worth of ice compared to the Antartica level pollution that any industrialized country releases to the atmosphere.

Or if you think the Thames or Missisippi rivers are as clean as they look, go and take deep dive into one of them and swallow a few mouthful of water and everyone will see how your bones will emerge floating down on the riverside.

If you complaint about the smoke in the DR, check the air quality of Bakersfield, Los Angeles or fresno, CA to name a few nice places to live and enjoy clean air.

Senor Mario must have been smoking something really bad,,,I have never seen a country with so many un needed plastic bags ,,Just going to a supermarket with your own carry bag would be better except you are prevented from bringing it in to some stores ..

These academics and public sector scam artists are cranking your tail again.
It's been many years since the ozone fraudsters were exposed by GOES satellite observations.
Get a job. Go to work at something productive. THAT will improve your "environment".

Forgive pelaut , he is one who denies that the climate is changing and part of it is caused by man.....those who mention auto emmisions have spotted a problem. Many old cars spew poisens into the air here.....inspection stations create jobs, raise revenue and provide clean air.
If there was clean water, fliltered and purified.....there would be little cholera, and much fewer plastic bottles......providing clean drinking water for the people should be made a government priority. Ricardolito....how can you be proud of the Dominican habit of dropping their garbage...botlles, bags etc wherever they feel? Your country is littered, the streets and the beautiful beaches with garbage.....rats play in the streets. This part of the culture needs to change...for health and for environment. If you only get angry at people who suggest ways to make the country better then you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

ramapo I am not proud of people who just polute the country with their rubbish ,,it is sad,,,and there are huge fines in some european countries...Of course in many developed countries plastic shopping bags are banned ,,and you buy a reuseable jute bag or bring your own bag ...As every one knows the USA is years behind in the need to reduce polution so we can understand the ignorance of anthonyC on this subject ..we can still learn a lot of good things from Europe

Many supermarkets in the US now offer reusable bags at the counter for groceries....littering is fined heavily and recycling is in effect.....someone needs to care and speak up. These things could be a positive advancement for the country.

Yea right,.....?!!! Then our government and environment department let the Central Mountains, rivers, fauna, and flora is being destroyed by Falcondo mining.
Did you ever noticed how Hawaii and the other American and British territory islands never get mined, and they have lot, and lots of natural resources.

Poponlaburra.....If you want to continue being a third world country who is governed by the elite and taken advantage of by foreign capitalists then go right ahead, sit at home and say "yea right" without exploring ways to improve your country......you sound discouraged....dont be. Things dont get better if you dont at least try!
