Santo Domingo.- The monthly salaries up to RD$33,326.00 (US$850.0) will no pay Income Tax (ISR), according to the Internal Taxes Agency’s (DGII) Income Table on the adjustment for annual inflation. The measure retroactive to January 1 will mean extra money for workers, since the Income Tax will now be levied on those who earn RD$2,443.92 more than that amount.
The current tax-exempt wage was up to RD$30,880 monthly.
A RD$30,950.00 salary had paid RD$3.45 income tax and will now be exempt, whereas a RD$50,000 wage paid RD$3,041.42 and now pays RD$2,501.43, for a monthly saving of RD$539.99.
A RD$65,000 monthly salary now pays RD$568.47 per month; salaries up to RD$33,350 will pay RD$3.46 in taxes, taking into account the 7.76 % inflation in 2011.

Adjusting the tax-free threshold to inflation helps low-income earners, but if the other breaks are not adjusted, high-income earners are still penalized by bracket-creep.

This is always a good idea to raise the lowest tax benchmark as it helps the poor and employees do pay tax here the people who do not pay their fair share of tax are the self employed where the government has a greater problem in assessing it
It may be a political decision but it is still a good one

Does Dominicans (the majorities) earn RD$ 33,326.00 per month? I doubt it very much....., or if this is the standard amount of living expenses, then the DR Governmant should know much better how many people can make that type of money?
Why can't be realistic and reflect the real life style in DR to people?

$850 dollars a month is about 5.50 to 6.00/hr and the living expense for the average DR resident is $1500/month that with out clothing and personal care items so how's some one with a family of 7 suppose to live.

THINK, you are missing the point. The tax-free limit in USA has nothing to do with the cost of living in the Dominican Republic, or anywhere. It is just saying people below a particular income don't have to pay income tax.

mrtibes, people should be paid in accordance with their contribution to society - what they are worth, not based on how many kids they have. If you only earn $850 per month, what are you doing having a wife and 5 kids?

Thelmo, perhaps this is what Dready refers to as the Dominican "entitlement mentality"?
In the barios, it seems to me that any money they get they should be able to spend on what they want, like beer, banca, iPhones and Jepetas, and the government should provide what they need, like education, housing, medical care, electricity, water, gas, and clothing and food for their kids at least.
The government has plenty of money. If not, they can just print more.

More like Socialism, Thelmo. Under Communism you are still required to work towards the common good.
