SANTO DOMINGO. - The country’s bananas and plantain harvests have still been climbing in the last few years on what the Ministry of Agriculture calls the correct application of the technological packages of irrigation for dry lands as well as the integrated control over pests.

But despite that Agriculture points to higher crop even during the winter, when lower temperatures lead to lower yields, the threat posed by the specter of the black sigatoka fungus has officials looking for answers to rescue banana and plantain plantations nationwide.

It said the sustained increase in production has placed the country among the hemisphere’s top exporters that meet the demands of global markets.

Agriculture said the significant increase in banana crops, mostly in the last quarter of 2011 was evidenced with a harvest of 508.6 million fruits.

Is this fungus just on the outside or does it penetrate into the fruit ,,The prices of bananas has stayed very stable so we do not seem to have a supply problem yet

From what I have read so far, Ricky, it (Mycosphaerella fijiensis) only affects the leaf, however the photo above suggests otherwise.
Some time ago I suggested genetic modification may be the answer, as the fungus keeps developing resistance to fungicides. I since found the following;
"A genetically modified banana variety made more resistant to the fungus has recently been developed and will be soon field tested in Uganda"
You may not want to eat GM bananas, but I have no problem with it.

Ricky,
How on earth can you know if GM bananas have no flavor, or have you been to Uganda to taste them?
You have probably eaten and enjoyed GM produce before and not known it.

Ricky, I think you are getting confused. It's GM for genetically modified, not CM for Carmen Miranda's plastic banana hat.

WOW

The fact that there are people who would make such an asinine and ignorant statement is mind boggling.

I wonder if he even realizes that almost every fruit and vegetable he has ever eaten is genetically modified?
