i think the metro is a tremendous step forward, i love hipolito but we need to go forward instead of spending money of sacks of rice and beans for the people, dominicans only care about booze, women, dancing, cabanas, and the lottery i have seen it, experienced it and realized that first hand so we need a president that keeps moving the country forward.
josean to answer your questions
1. the metro improves the life of the 3 plus million people in the capital, especially students and the working class, the metro does wonders for them
2. the metro eases the commute to school for thousands of students daily, so it does improve education and makes it more reachable.
3. the metro is not polluting the street with black smoke like all the buses so it helps improve the overall health of everybody in the capital.
i can go on but the metro is what this country needs at the moment and think about it, the money used on the metro woulda been either stolen or used on the metro.

let me correct some of his ,or her, misconceptions. firstly, the metro does NOT serve the 3 million people in the capital. it serves the people who live within what is known as the catchment area, generally denoted as a distance a half a mile away from the nearest station. people do not walk miles to catch a train. as to education....can you tell me how the metro improves education? are you serious with that statement, or was it said in jest? are you suggesting that a guy who rides the metro to school gets a better education than the guy who got there in the 1989 Nissan Sentra?

deadlocks am assuming u would have liked for the money spent on the metro to be prob standing still in the gov waiting to be stolen, this country needs a metro, the problem is you have the typical dominican mentality that only thinks about today but not tomorrow, if new york wouldnt have invested billions of dollars in its infrastructure it wouldnt be the capital of the world it is today i guarantee you that, i know to you having a train that carries people instead of sugar cain is mind boggling but believe it or not every country needs a good infrastructure to move its people and help everybody keep moving forward, and as far as education, it makes a heck of a difference when someone can get to school in 20min rather than 50min with so many cars and buses in the capital.

1) Many students read and even do their homework on the train. If you try to do that squashed with 5 other passengers in the 1989 Nissan Sentra you would get travel-sickness.
2) Some suburban train and bus stations have "park-and-ride". People beyond walking distance ride pushbikes or drive from home then park at the station. During peak-hour there are express services to the city underground loop. This relieves congestion in the inner city areas, and saves on parking in the city which is very expensive.

Some people here just think about education, and yes we need to improve it a lot and it is a priority but so is transportation, mass transportation in a nation is of equal importance for not just students, but everyone, including those with vehicles, since it would reduce the number of "carros publicos and "voladoras" in Sto Dgo, less pollution, more time to study and spend with family, since the time to commute is shorter, less gas, etc.
Let's not forget that about 40% of DR's population lives in the capital's metropolitan area, so for those living in Santiago, just wait for your turn, your system is already in the pipeline, along with the passenger and cargo train from Los Alcarrizos to Santiago, serving La Vega, Moca, Bonao, SFM, Villa Altagracia and other communities, but we need to finish this system first, now if Hippo wins, forget about it, everybody knows that during his tenure he built NOTHING and did not improve ANYTHING.

This 2nd line will increase the number of riders dramatically since coupled with the feeding bus lines system being developed to serve it and soon to begin operations, they will allow for many transfer combinations from north, south, east and west. Right now the 1st line without the feeding buses serves more than 100k passengers per day, since the 2nd line will go under the JFK corridor which is DR's busiest and recently expanded, many more lower to middle class Dominicans in the capital and even those who live in San Cristobal, SPM and near towns who work or study in Sto Dgo will improve their quality of life by having a much more decent and safer commute, I still don't see the upper middle and rich classes to fire their chauffers to jump in the train but even they will have a less dangerous drive.

Education and knowledge, generally equals a high degree of intelligence. But I couldn't tell you what intelligence really is, because I don't know.
I can only tell you what I THINK it is and it's NOT. But these are just theories of mine, I could very well be wrong.
It's is not flaunting it. One does not declare himself to be more or better at anything to anyone. To do so, reveals a sense of insecurity and doubt to the contrary.
Knowledge begets understanding, compassion, tolerance, questionings, and looking at things from all perspectives before judgement.
Formal education is that which one can never get enough of. It is a process that almost always require time and effort, and one that never stops.
Parental/cultural education is vital in order to obtain the above. Without it, we're delusional fools.

i seem to be mentally challenged, offers this moron , with an IQ less than his or her shoe size. did you go to school, yourself? am i to take it that the kids who are now doing poorly in scholastic achievement testing are doing so because it takes them longer to get to school? i am glad we are having this debate, because i am learning something hew. i always thought that the quality of education depended on things like personal motivation, the education culture, the amount of assets available, teacher quality, and such issues. now, insantiago introduces an angle , hitherto unexplored by any meaningful scholar....the time it takes to get to school. by such logic, my dear imbecile, the kids who live closer to the schoolyard should always get the better exam results, no?
EDUCATION is a NATIONAL EMERGENCY in the entire country!
There are no recorded cases in human history were someone has learned to read or do math by ridding a METRO!
Socrates and Plato never had the "benefit" of a METRO but had the tremendous benefit of an EDUCATION!
1) Many students read and even do their homework on the train. If you try to do that squashed with 5 other passengers in the 1989 Nissan Sentra you would get travel-sickness.
in Melbourne, the kids study, whereever. how many people have you seen studying on public transportation , here?
Socrates and Plato never had the "benefit" of a METRO but had the tremendous benefit of an EDUCATION!
insantiago will probably inform you that they both lived across the street from the school.
Some weeks ago I saw a guy sitting on a park bench reading a book. As it turned out, he was a foreigner.
I have never seen anyone here read on public transport, or waiting in a queue, (including university students waiting up 4 hours to pay fees) or in waiting-rooms in clinics, or waiting in long queues at the bank on pay-day.
Can't afford books, magazines of newspapers, I guess.
I have seen plenty texting and reading on their blackberrys and iPhones while driving or riding a bike, 'though.
Can't afford books, magazines of newspapers, I guess.
have you seen the prices of Barcelo and Brugal, recently? it seems not.
Be polite...I think we have the right to agree and not to agree....Yes? or is this a dictatorship?
face it deadlock, theres no more space in this country for a gov to spend all its money on bags of bread and rice and beans for the population, look at countries that have a high HDI and compare their infrastrucre to this one and you will see why a good solid infrastructure is needed for this country to keep developing itself
Let's not forget that about 40% of DR's population lives in the capital's metropolitan area, so for those living in Santiago, just wait for your turn, your system is already in the pipeline, along with the passenger and cargo train from Los Alcarrizos to Santiago, serving La Vega, Moca, Bonao, SFM, Villa Altagracia and other communities, but we need to finish this system first, now if Hippo wins, forget about it, everybody knows that during his tenure he built NOTHING and did not improve ANYTHING.

haha dreadlock is pissed and using insults because all his comments are shaded grey with all the negative marks,
firstly, the only reason why i am using insults is because some cretin, with a mentality and intellectual capability of a six year old , made this remark, without provocation
since you seem to be mentally challenged let me simplify this
put this in your pipe, and smoke it. on my worst day, i am infinitely more educated, and knowledgeable, than you are, or will ever live long enough to be, on your best. so, have a little respect, and try to join the human race, rather than acting like the low class bumpkin that it is evident that you are. if you want a civil discourse, sit still, and learn. when you achieve GED status, the you can take the steering wheel. otherwise, sit at the shallow end, and dangle your toes in the water. the adults are swimming now.
If you or your parents paid for that college education in New Jersey please go get a refund because they left you as dumb as a door nail!

deadlock i received an education from a college in new jersey
you should sue them for non performance, and have them refund any fees you might have paid them to educate you. received an education..in what? what are you, insofar as being able to decide what a country needs for development? are you an economist, of any kind? maybe you were educated in some community college in New Jersey, with a diploma in culinary skills. thanks for bringing my attention to the world development index. without you, i would never have heard of it. in your own words, tell me what you believe are the most important determinants of Total Factor Productivity, and whether you think that the sector matters in vertical and horizontal spillovers of FDI technology. do you think that there is a correlation between academic attainment, and economic advancement? if you can't answer, shut your trap, and sit, and learn.
so, isantiago, look at what you have been exposed to, for free. now, go get your tuition fees back.

Do you need a "Visa" to ride the Metro?
LMAO
Good one Jo!
MAYBE JUST MAYBE!!!!! THE power will go out and the brakes will fail...
Just a sick thought.... The could call it "line 3"
"put this in your pipe, and smoke it. on my worst day, i am infinitely more educated, and knowledgeable, than you are,"
Are you, Mr. Dread?....Anyone who is, doesn't need to prove it or announce it to the world!
You may be knowledgeable, but are you really educated?
"There are no recorded cases in human history were someone has learned to read or do math by ridding a METRO!"
By "ridding" a metro?... Apparently, for lack of transport, you weren't able to get to school and learn proper spelling.
Sir, understand this: In order to do a job well done, one needs to have the proper tools. This METRO, is just ONE of many "proper" tools a student needs to do a job, well done!
The system is a vital link to schools, job sites and places of employments.
As the saying goes, "Time is money". Time stuck in traffic is lost money in more ways than one.
2) the cost of a gallon of gas, presently > $5.00 USD per regular.
3) the intangibles, but very real costs in ill health do to exhaust inhalation, stress, enhanced risk of an accident, a risk of being robbed at gun point, being pick-pocketed or killed riding conchos in close proximity to dreadful people, etc.
Those against modern transport lack vision, glasses won't help....pity!
well said ronevane :)
..... Continue.
"By "ridding" a metro?... Apparently, for lack of transport, you weren't able to get to school and learn proper spelling."
Never losing an opportunity to take the MINUTIA cheap shot; just like the Purple ones always focusing on the irrelevant t in an effort to distort or divert attention from the bigger important issues.
It is amazing how so learned and individual and EXCELLENT SPELLER or user of spell check, whatever the case may be, and can’t understand the difference between wants and a needs.
Or between a reelection gimmick and a true NATIONAL PRIORITY; like the DOMINICAN EDUCATION CRISIS and that no matter how many METROS we build and how quick we get from point A to point B we are falling behind in the WORLDWIDE competition for educational improvement!
No matter how fast we transport ourselves within a few kilometers in Santo Calcutta, every day we ARRIVE LATE to the Worldwide Educational Challenge!
And it gets progressively worse every second of everyday!
Here is another fan of the DISPROPORTIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF PUBLIC RESOURCES the PLD is so famous for!
“Santiago entrepreneurs complain about lack of public works projects”
“Sandy Filpo says the government only remembers about this province 4 years”
“SANTIAGO.-The President of the Association of merchants and industrialists of Santiago (ACIS), Sandy Filpo, expressed his regret because this province cannot display a major work of development driven by the Dominican State15years, although it makes great contributions to the gross domestic product (GDP).”

how can people get so sidetracked ..we need good safe public public transport in the capital and we need an improved education system ..we need both and not either or
and, Ricardolito, which do you believe represents the greater priority, in this country, at this time?
1...do you believe that the country can make economic and social progress without the existence of an educated workforce? in the pantheon of determinants of Total Factor Productivity, what place do you believe that education occupies?how can the physical factors of productivity, land, labor, and capital, be transformed into wealth without being acted upon by proficient human capital, in the form of educated, well trained, and innovative minds?
2..do you believe that the aforementioned Human Capital can attain any worthwhile level of competence without the benefits of a QUALITY education?how can citizens develop the absorptive capacity for learning cutting edge technologies and best practices , and how can they create their own technologies
A public education system is essential.
If your heart stops, you die.
If you stop breathing, you die.
It is meaningless to argue over what is more important.
The Dominican Republic has deficient transport and education systems. Get rid of the corruption, the military and the church and you can have world-class transport and education systems, and a prosperous, civil society.
3...what do you consider to be the major obstacles to education, in the DR, at this time?
4...how does the existence of the Metro address, and ameliorate, any of the aforementioned problems? does the fact that it constitutes a cleaner, more orderly, and more punctual means of getting from point a to point b offset the education deficit occasioned by the fact that scarce resources have been allocated in its direction, as opposed to education?
these should be easy questions for a scholar such as yourself to grapple with. i mean, you know things that some of us have never heard about, such as the existence of the World Development Index
RonEvane quizzes
You may be knowledgeable, but are you really educated?
that depends entirely upon who is the one doing the evaluation. give me a list of your criteria, and that will better position me to supply you with an answer.

that's more like it, isantiago. stick to three word sentences. that is more your comfort level.
"put this in your pipe, and smoke it. on my worst day, i am infinitely more educated, and knowledgeable, than you are,"
Education and knowledge, generally equals a high degree of intelligence.
More later, gotta go.
Dread,
These Purple contortionists will do or say anything to justify the "investment" of 2 billion dollars US plus in a non-priority METRO to educational nowhere!
They will distort reality to try to defend this reelection gimmick of their Lord and savior Lie-onel!
When you present then with logical arguments as to why the METRO, although it may be needed, is not a priority when Dominican children are reverting to the Dark Ages in education compared to the peers in the world, then they resort to oldest trick in the book; attacking the messenger in effort to discard the message.
They don’t even have the decency to acknowledge that the Criminal in the National Palace has been in violation of the constitution for 8 years and the funding of the non-METRO is a partial result of the illegal denial of the 4% of GDP to education.
This is outrageous case of robbing Pedro to pay Pablo.
The Purple Ministry of “Education” plans to evict one school to relocate another.
But we will here from the Purple Megaphones and apologist for this abominable government that the METRO was priority!
“Anguish in the April 24 sector because of the possible eviction of Primary School Rosario López”

" strangely, you are remiss to excoriate your fellow countryman for a severe lapse in manners. is this, once more, some inter-island issue? does nationality trump common decency, in this case?"
Mr. Dread, I seldom bother to tread into people's commentaries that don't hold my interest or pique my curiosity.
I apologize in advance for my inappropriate questioning. It's a character flaw of mine, mostly due to an urge in uncovering, the real person behind the words.
I perceive you as a complex identity with a propensity for setting the rules straight, sometimes with more bang than seemingly necessary.
My observation was borned more out of mild shock than reproach. I, in no way, consider islands to be relevant in this exchange of ideas. that is not an issue to be, even remotely contemplated, in future talks. In any case, it is inconsequential what I think. I'm just blabbing.
IT was kind of scary being in the dark!

matador,
How does the METRO improve the quality\y of life for the multi millions of Dominicans that don't live in the immediate area of the METRO and will never use it?
How does the METRO improve EDUCATION?
How does the METRO improve the HOSPITALS and health care?
How does the METRO improve the HOUSING CRISIS and fight the slumming of the Capital?
How does the METRO improve ELECTRICAL SERVICE to stimulate small business expansion throughout the country?
Just to name a few of the REAL National Priorities
