Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez and Public Works Public Works minister Victor Diaz headed the ribbon cutting for a six lane Duarte highway overpass over the Monumental Av. yesterday, the seventh of eight structures that form the set of works called the Duarte Corridor.
Diaz said the overpass was built by the Duarte Corridor contractors Estrella and Odebrecht, at a cost of US$18.3 million (RD$717.4 million), with a five year return of investment.
He said 21 new works will be inaugurated in the next 30 days nationwide and announced the start of construction on April 25 of one of the proposed North-South highways, to link the Duarte highway at Piedra Blanca, with the Sanchez highway near Azua.

What a relief it will be when cars can use that overpass...for months it has taken half an hour or more just to pass by the works on the overpass ..as 5 lanes progressively get jammed into one. That over pass was really essential . Now I hope the government looks at all the hassles on Avenida Mella at Charles de Gualle and at Mega Centro...they are also traffic nightmares

Yes you are right education should begin at home but when the parents are uneducated and illiterate how can they possibly begin to educate their children. It's a "chicken and egg" situation and the only resolution is for children to be educated properly in schools so that they can help to educate their children when they are adults. Otherwise the situation will just continue as it now is.

Adrian29630, I have to disagree.
One does not need to have a good education to recognize the importance of education. I have seen many migrant families in Australia where the parents are almost illiterate with very little education. They work 2 jobs and save, not to buy a big, new, SUV, or the latest iPhone or big-screen TV, but to give their kids a good education.
In our community here I have seen many big, new, SUVs, the latest iPhones and big-screen TVs, but I have never seen anyone, adult or child, reading a book. My wife and I have offered free English and music lessons (including a loan instrument). No takers - not one.
I was involved in a number of 4% education demonstrations. The only participants were teachers and university students. Education is not a high priority for the government because it is not a priority for much of the electorate. Sorry, Ricky, but it's true.

I don't think we disagree. As you say in other countries where children can go to a good state school and get a good education they at least have a chance. Here the standards are so low and the available hours so little that even those children who do go to a state school have a very low quality of education. That's why the 4% everyone talks about is so important as a means of raising standards to acceptable levels. I am step father to two Dominican girls of 6 & 8 so I see exactly how bad the situation is both in terms of school hours and quality of teaching. I also see the end term reports which bear no relation to the actual standards achieved!
I insist they don't miss school and try to help them at home as well but they only get 3.5 hours per day and very often the school is closed for teacher meetings or other inexplicable reasons so they are lucky if they get 12 to14 hours a week.

Education starts at home you are right . There is a misunderstanding what the term education is.
In the Anglo American system it is the schools and teachers supposevely are responsable for the kids education and that has benn proven fatal. While in the Hispanic American vocabulary education means something else. You could come from illiterate family and taught manners as well asd conducting yourself in public and that is a well educated person.
As for the schooling, hiegher education (universities) to learn a career or profesion, that falls in the hands of the educators ,teachers ,vocational and tech schools to better yourself for the future,
Again and again it has been proven that kids that don't have the basic at home become very hard to pick up a trade for the future.
I brought up this subject to Franklin Almeyda Rancier, recently, who was the Rector of the University in Santo Domingo under Balaguer...his answer was the same as RoyStone's.

The politicians, regardless of their party, have a vested interest in keeping the people uneducated and begging for handouts. When the populace needs something (all the time) they have to "be good" otherwise the people in power won't help them in their misery.
