Santo Domingo.- A recent report by a prominent agribusiness publication reveals the lack of consistent policies by the Dominican Government to sustain a robust production of fruit and vegetables, especially those coveted by European marketers.

Among the most noted cases is that of the organic bananas of the country’s Northwest, once among Latin America’s top producers, where a lack of financing keeps the plantations from their full yield.

And although the area’s organic banana exports have managed to gain a decades-old foothold in Europe, several other major crops suffer from a lack of reliable supply.

As reported by FreshPlaza, “avocado, mango, pineapple and citrus are in high demand by British merchants, who demanded to know "why was it so difficult to buy from the Dominican Republic."

"If they sell one year, the next they don’t even pick up the phone," the industry publication said, citing one of the merchants, who operated for years in the largest wholesale markets in London.

"If we are to export more, we have to know what is wanted, who wants it and how," said Dominican Ambassador Federico Cuello, quoted by local news source diariolibre.com.

Sure...Blame the Government when we all know the real reason it just Bad Business practices.

The Banana people want cheap, taxpayer funded financing because they are so inefficient they can't compete.

One blames the other and other blames one......
When in fact both are to blame with bad practices within business and government... Inconsistent product and inconsistent policies make both look like fools....

I cannot see how , in a capitalistic society , private producers can blame anyone else butthemselves for poor business practices ..So many writers here have been annoyed when the President and other ministers promote the DR overseas, but it seems that foresthill and anthonyc are correct in saying we are not service orientated .Well you know that even in most shops and restaurants , service is rather casual .And there is money available from the banks and from others for good financial propositions .
On my trips to London where my son was living , I saw the quality of the fruit from Western Africa and often wondered how we could ever compete when our quality control on fruit is also very erratic /

Ricardolito claims that Dominican quality control is ¨erratic¨. sorry, Ricardolito. the word is ¨nonexistent¨: one of the problems Dominicans have, in the world of marketing ANYTHING, is that nobody here has a CLUE about customer relations. ZERO. when you walk into a store in the USA, a salesman comes over, right away, because they want your business. they realize that you are the important part of the equation, because you can take your business elsewhere. Dominicans have the opposite viewpoint.. they believe that they can take a nonchalant attitude towards you, because they have what you want, and they will sell it to you when they are good , and ready. if you really want that pair of blue Nikes, sit still, and wait, until i am done sending this text message to abuela.

yes Dreadlocks , you are quite correct ..,,these cel phones are a bloody nuisance ..people cannot walk straight on the footpaths, can not serve you in a store, cannot drive safely and destroy peace in too many restaurants ..They drive me crazy ,,...well as for service here ,I am now totally atuned to the lack of it and take appropriate action of leaving the store or restaurant ..
cel phone abusers are worse than smokers in banned places.

Here are current customers that are being ignored by the Purple Plague!

“The British want to purchase fruits of RD"

“They say, however, there is difficulty to buy”

SANTO DOMINGO. British sellers of avocados, mangos, pineapples and citrus products in Bristol and Spitafields asked why is "so difficult" buy in the Dominican Republic."

“One year they sell to us the following year the wouln’t even pick up the phne," lamented one of the interviewees, who has operated for years in the most important wholesale market of the United Kingdom in Spitafields, directly opposite the London Olympic Park.”

The reason you can't reach them is because they made enough money the first year to last until the next. But if you want to reach them just call the colmado, there in front playing dominoes.
