Santo Domingo. – Of a total of 100 commuter buses acquired to provide service for Santo Domingo’s Metro (subway), 50 are already in the country, revealed Transport Reform Office (Opret) assistant director Leonel Carrasco, quoted by eldia.com.do.

The 35-passenger vehicles are already in the shops for checks and Opret trains the drivers on how to maintain the Metro’s quality standards

The Hyundai buses will be used in the Metro’s first line, from the city of Villa Mella and other towns in the north, to the Centro de los Heroes (La Feria) in the south, as part of a pilot plan being developed, the official said

Carrasco said commuters would access the service, to be tentatively called “metrobus,” by using a “swipe” card or ticket “without major inconvenience.”

This is part of the integration of service under one umbrella needed to make the system work properly. Major metropolitan transit authorities worldwide funnel passengers to and from the undergrounds via their own equipment or suppliers under contract. It provides a better unified control of surface traffic flow and can be adjusted to the varying needs of supply of equipment (buses) at stations when there is a high demand of transport due to special events, or time of day ect. It also facilitates the transfer of passengers between stations should any section of the Metro be out of service.

"Opret trains the drivers on how to maintain the Metro’s quality standards"

Is this the same standard of all the other buses in the capital?? best they get the hammers out and smash all the brake and turning lights before they are on the road....

So a multi billion dollar project get connection buses AFTER is starts??? opening for commercial use on January 30, 2009... connecting buses April 23, 2012...oh but they aren't in use yet?
What is easier building a sub surface rail network or buying buses to connect them???

Better late than never....... I guess?

You just have to give them the chance chance to get it right.
Dominican politicians just need some remedial or special ed classes in governorship.

DT, it is obvious you used a stock photo of a motor coach. If one takes notice, its access door is on the left side of the coach going forward. I suspect location is in SE Asia. It is also difficult to confrm what is the make of coach by the trademark logo; as it does not appear to be Hyundai.

You could do better.

How much does a bus cost?

How much did we pay?

This was not done in the first place because the government, as always, was scared of the dreaded transport unions and their crime boss leaders.

I don't know what deal they made now and how much it cost, but it is a step ahead.

A question comes to mind; were the Hyundai buses purchased through their agent in DR Magna Motors, or is it a remake of the Plan Renove from the Hippo days??

This why we need an Audit of this whole fiasco: who is telling the truth!

“The PRD accuses the builders of the Metro of overvaluations”

“In a press conference held at the Joaquin Balaguer station of the Santo Domingo Metro, reformist leader Osiris de Leon said that the total over-valuation of the two lines amounts to RD$ 4,831 million on the purchase of 102 cars.”

“He pointed out that the Government paid for each wagon of the first line $ US$2 million 158 thousand 333 dollars to Transport Alscom company on 31 May 2006, which, in his view, contrasts with the amount of US$1 million 135 thousand 265 dollars paid to that same company by the subway in Shanghai, China, built around the same time.”

“The over-valuation by each subway car, he said, was a US$1 million 22 thousand 965 dollars.”

"After 4 years the(sic) finaly(sic) discovered that the HORSE goes before the CART!" josean

josean, are you are alluding to the plan of putting the Metro in service before the use of the motor coaches or you may be alluding to use coaches only? The gov't choice was correct.

Had the government purchased and authorized buses to run the connector routes first without a Metro would be seen as a threat to the transit sindicates who would claim propriety rights to the surface routes. However, having the Metro in place first, suggests the proprietary rights the sindicates may claim as nil.

Adding more coaches without the thought of any subterrainian service, may in the short run alleviate some traffic congestion. However, population growth will overcome the capacity of surface transit corridors to handle the demand of increased passengers per mile. It warrants the use of a subterrainian. Short terms solutions involve reconfiguring traffic flow and restricting traffic.

Zooma,

What I am alluding to is there was NO PLAN other than using close to a Billion dollars on a Choo-Choo Train Gimmick to get Lie-onel re-elected.

You would think that in any rational planning process that may have taken place, there would have been some consideration as to how the riders were going to be fed to the METRO?

During that planning process wouldn’t they have conducted environmental impact studies; using the broader definition of environment to mean the social concerns as well including potential hostility to the project by labor unions?

Who planned this anyway dumb Hippo or the "Geniuses" of the PLD?

Josean,

The PRD's accusations of inflated metro sets prices, when compared to the alleged prices paid by China's Shangai metro are a little weak. Let me explain, I think they are assuming that our project and Chinas are 100% identical. Basically, that both, China and Dominican Rep. order the same amount of car sets with the same type of functionalities and modifications. It is not like, Alstrom had a couple of hundred car sets already assembled waiting for buyers. These train cars are build "à la carte", and many factors will directly and indirectly will affect the final price. This factors include delivery methods, number of train sets, assembly costs, etc, etc.

In fact, Alstrom have many ventures in China, including the assemble of the "Rolling Stock" models, for the Shanghai Metro, by Changchun Bombardier Railway Vehicles Co Ltd (CBRC) in China which probably contributes to the lower cost.

Arcangel96,

Assuming that the points you raise have more merit than those raised by the PRD then this the reason why we need a an independent transparent AUDIT don’t you think?

Wouldn’t that be the best way to put an end to all the speculation?

Josean,

I agree that independent and transparent audits should be part of the normal process for all goverment projects. However, I have the feeling that these allegations are not motivated by the lack of transparency, concrete proof, or the best interest of our society, but politics alone.

Audits are done regardless of political considerations made-up or real. They are the normal course in democratic states.

In this project the need for them is flagrantly obvious don't you think?

Josean,

I looked all over for this report, however I was unsuccessful. A little Googling results in a series of hits, where in 2007 calls for audits are made. Then, in 2009, a little "blurp" in the newspaper "Hoy", reads that an audit is being conducted by the "Camara de Cuentas". To be honest I'm a little disappointed that this information is not more easily available.

Arcangel,

I appreciate the effort and I was not being sarcastic or disrespectful. However to my knowledge some extremely competent people in the field of investigating and analyzing these types of Audits have looked for them also to no avail.

I don't think even the NSA with their super spy computers could find them because frankly I have come to the conclusion the simply don't exist!

But believe me if they do they will be found because there are some very serious folks looking!
