Santo Domingo.- The number of buying companies which attended the Dominican Annual International Tourism Exchange DATE 2012 jumped 24% compared with last year.
More than 209 buyers from 134 travel agencies and tour operators attended the tourism services fair, compared with 108 in 2011.
Speaking in the fair held from April 17 to 19, Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia said the tourism sector posted record growth of around 9% in the first quarter, with a total of 1.4 million tourists.
In the event hosted by the hotels and tourism companies grouped in the Asonahores, the official stressed the investments in hotels and roads in recent years, such as the construction of the Coral Highway, slated to open by late July, and the Tourist Boulevard of the Atlantic, which he affirms will significantly boost visits to Santo Domingo.
For Asonahores president Julio Llibre the sector's performance was positive in 2011, and remains optimistic on projected growth in tourist arrivals to all regions for the first months this year.

Last month , the hotels came out with a statement basically agreeing that there had been a substantial increase, we know that more flights are now coming into la Romana and Punta Cana especially and you only have to try to make a reservation to see that the tourist hotels are doing well ...There is far , far ,more evidence that there has been an increase in tourism than the contrary .
The cruise ship figures are also up ..so it is very good news for the country ..and every one who is employed in the hotels or supplies the hotels .

I just came from visiting the 38th International Book Fair in Buenos Aires, Argentina and even though the covered area is huge and and the exhibitors displays have elegant and gourgeous designs. Hey Josean, why don't you just do a study of your own by going to those tourist places and ask them how was business last year and how is it doing this year. I live and work in Juan Dolio and just recently visited Las Terrenas the weekend after Semana Santa thinking that it was going to be slow and I would it have time to relax, well that was not the case. The place was pack with tourists from Santo Domingo (middle class families) and from Europeans and North American countries.
Get a a life Josean. We all know that you hate the Dominican Republic and the PLD, but if you do the math you will soon find out that most DT posters are favoring the way the country is running now.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The U.N.'s World Trade Organization says 1 billion people will cross international borders as tourists this year for the first time.
The WTO's regional director for the Americas, Carlos Vogeler, predicted Wednesday that the milestone will be reached in the fall.
That figure would be about 4 percent higher than last year's total. Back in 1950, the figure was 25 million. The UN counts only people who stay at least one night. It does not include cruise ship passengers.
"It is quite iconic when you realize 1 billion people crossed borders," Vogeler said at a Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association conference in Puerto Rico. "It shows from a sociological point of view how things have changed. If you go back 20-30 years, many people would die without traveling more than 100 miles from home.

then what? goes to see the amber museum? goes to the gift shops around p central park? { where every shop sells the same products?}
boring city. {but the government did clean up long beach and the malecon}.
may times looking at the eye sore's along the water front i would think of south beach in miami beach,
its all their for the taking if things where to change, clean up the country, stop robbing the tourists {many treat them as prey}
yeah now your going to tell me it happens in other countrys now.
