But why not go all the way North? why stop at Santiago? For another billion why not go East West as well, link the SD airport to the city.

Yahoo!...This is a great undertaking for our nation!..It will ease transport on Rt. 1 (one); Will reduce the number of vehicles, hence less use of expensive gasoline and will cut down drastically, traffic fatalities on that stretch. It will make for an safe and enjoyable trip to Santiago and beyond! Will further help develop the Cibao region by encouraging more industries along the line;.. Will facilitate production and export which means more jobs, more affluence and more investments!
I wonder when this is projected to begin construction and where they'll garner and attract the one Billion from "the private sector"...!?

East West. Meaning to La Romana, Punta Cana even to Barahona
I see it very strange that the North South would not go to Pueto Plata?? It would reopen it to internal tourism from SD, even live in Santiago work in Pueto Plata or other way around..

RonEvane,
Kudos for your post, one of few that shows good intellect, not biased by political color.
The US would not have expanded and prospered as well as it did without a good transportation network. It started with the the railroads of the late 19th and early 20th century to include the construction of interstate highway system (Eisenhower's dream and Idea) from 1950's onward that linked all the states. Good transportation networks are a catalyst of commerce and economic growth.
The transportation incentives here, if managed correctly, will stimulate the economy and improve living conditions. But, it has to be done step by step, not with big bites, as the country does not have sufficient resources for a countrywide rail network.

The benefits from rail service are too many to note and have direct tangibles and indirect intangibles, that spell out eventual benefits for all!
The railroad business is today, experiencing a renaissance. It will be the mover and shaker of a nation's economy, as it once was... The long-distance trucking industry will disappear and become much more localized. The rising in price and scarcity of the world's oil supply, says so!...

Hipolito Mejia summarizes his proposals
Speaking on the Voto-2012 special TV series with interviews with the candidates on their proposals for the 20 May presidential election, former President Hipolito Mejia said that fighting corruption would be a key priority of his government. He described corruption as a "national disgrace." He said he is prepared for government officials who may err in their decisions, but not for those who take what is not theirs, and said they would have judicial problems because he would "not play around with that." He said he would apply existing laws to fight corruption and would reform others. He said that administrative corruption is a cancer that has metastasized.

Mejia said he would fight the wasteful spending that has the Dominican Republic in 142nd place of 142 countries in the wasteful spending category in the World Economic Forum global competitiveness report. He criticized the way in which the government payroll has ballooned, describing it as "a sterile bureaucracy".
He criticized the fact that government resources are used to employ 334 deputy ministers, with 37 vice consuls in New York alone, and that there are vice consuls who do not even live in the areas where they are appointed. He pledged austerity in his new government. Mejia, speaking at the televised talk hosted by the Corripio media group on TeleAntillas (Channel 2) and TeleSistema (Channel 11), said that he would give priority to agriculture, education, public health, production, and making available credit to productive sectors.

He expressed his support for the small and medium-sized business sector, saying that they are the backbone of the country's development, welfare and social and economic stability. He said education was the basic priority of his government, because without education there are no possibilities for progress. He said health would be his second priority, and recalled that it was during his government that the present social security bill was approved. He criticized the fact that the country now depends on imports, for many items that the country should be purchasing from local farmers. "I continue with my ties to the farm and because I am from that sector, I am sure there are extraordinary opportunities in agriculture," he said, as reported in Hoy.

Paying much more for metro cars
In a letter addressed to Listin Diario columnist Orlando Gil, engineer Osiris de Leon writes that the Fernandez administration is paying much more for the Alstom metro cars compared to metro companies in China and Singapore. He says that in 2007, the 57 cars of line 1 were purchased for EUR1.6 million each, while the Shanghai metro purchased the same cars from the same companies at the time for EUR850,000 each.
For line 2 he says we are purchasing each metro car for US$3 million, while the Singapore metro purchased each unit for US$1.5 million.
"The country should know that the Shanghai metro paid Alstom EUR210 million and received 246 cars. While the DR has paid the same company EUR194 million and has received only 102 cars without any convincing explanation for the difference for the unbeatable metro," he writes.

Airgordo, perhaps you may not be seeing the whole picture.
Let me explain;
I’m a very old guy who knows, that I don’t know diddlysquat about much. Therefore, before I make any important decisions, I study the situation and, more often than not, seek advice from people who know more about the issue at hand than I do! Then, I formulate a strategy, and go from there.
I tell you this because, a person always, and I mean always, has to spend money to make money, and one needs to know how to do this…Oh sure, you have a toothache and need to see a dentist! But at the same time, you also have a mortgage to pay, and don’t have money for both! What would you do?
Sometimes, sacrifices need to be made for the sake of a better, more prosperous future. It is entirely within reason to assume that a rail line to El Cibao, can help develop all sorts of industry, and further stimulate and accelerate agribusiness by facilitating export, thereby earning the money necessary to..

You can do BOTH, you can invest on areas that will generate Money while Covering at least your basic needs, which should come FIRST, example: Cholera DEAD people don't ride on Trains, CLOSED industries due to extremely high cost on this country, CAN"T generate Freight for such a Train...so FIRST you generate FREIGHT by having INDUSTRIES like once was on santiago, then you look for a way to move it like a train, NOT backwards.

We can build power plants, but we also need to import lots of coal, natural gas, or diesel.
That is one hell of an expense, unless we generate our own gas or biodiesel, and I don't think we have that capability yet....So, the more feasible and logical next step is to build this rail line. It will realize a more solid, quicker benefit!

"due to extremely high cost on this country, CAN"T generate Freight for such a Train...so FIRST you generate FREIGHT by having INDUSTRIES like once was on santiago,"
No, Mr. Airgordo! You have it all backwards. There's no way you can establish industries and generate capital without a ready market and transportation... In order to sell your wares, you'd need to have a way of getting it there... How can you sell anything and make money, if it can't be brought to the marketplace?
Commerce has everything to do with transport....Be it national or international. You need to ship things around the world where people can buy your products! How else can you do business?...Ideally, products and produce need to be sold at a centralized marketplace. We go to the "Mercado" for our groceries. How do you think these things got there?..If not brought to you, you'd have hard time getting them, wouldn't you? ...Am I making sense!?

Politics as usual, want to get those votes from the Cibao region. This is the rail that should have been built in the first place, but all the way to Monte Cristi, and to reconstruct the old Sanchez - La Vega, going through San Francisco, Salcedo, Moca, Santiago. Talking about 90% of export from the whole nation and uncountable numbers of passengers. Rebuild Sanchez docks and a mega dock in Manzanillo in Monte Cristi. Exports is what makes a country's people rich and raise out of poverty. Not words and vain promises.

Today in USA and Europe, when you are talking about transportation of big amount of material, importations, distribution, mail, vehicles, animals, etc, etc .. Anything between states that need more than 2 trailers, you are taking about trains..
That's why trains will never go away..
The one that pass by my home, takes 15 minutes to finish passing by at a high speed..
it would be way easier for people to have the proper channels of distribution ,transportation and exportation.
You need it, but you dont know how bad you do..
that's why the yucca , produce , plantain, fruits, etc that we eat abroad come from Costa Rica, Honduras, etc.not from D.R. because we simply don't have the proper channels of FRESH distribution from Cibao Central to the ports of distribution.
it's about efficiency..and more business and progress !

2- You eat produce from Costa rica because the Government On Costa Rica CARES about production!!! i'm sure Costa Rica does not have an IMPORT MAFIA like the one that is here on DR, then the national agro-industry CAN'T compete with that, they even have to pay their @ss for stuff like TRACTORS which pay the same duties as a Mercedes-Benz. THAT is what you have to fix!! we import even HABICHUELAS!! that is something that can never be forgiven to this stupid government, even having PETRO CARIBE there, where you can PAY with the agro part of the oil that we owe!!! and THIS people DON'T CARE!
3- ANY port can be reached on an average of 3 hours by truck!!!

@airgordo I like your denomination. "IMPORT MAFIA" That is exactly what they have in DR, an import mafia supported by the government. But that is not new, this organized crime sector was developed during the old Balaguer government, specially the motor vehicle importers mafia.
The "IMPORT MAFIA" have been strangling the Dominican economy for decades. Like leaches draining any possible growth in the country. They are the ones that have deter the government from investing in railways. Got to make those huge sums in truck imports, tractors and trailer.
Those crooks ought to be all in jail. And the CAFTA nations, should legally force the Dominican government to comply with the the North America trade agreement on tariffs. But that is another issue all together.
As far as comparing DR to U.S. or EUROPE it is a little uneven. However, let us compare to NEW ZELAND, a couple of islands in the middle of no where. They has one of the highest per capita income in the world.

"also give thousands of people in the cities Santiago, La Vega and Bonao the opportunity to commute to the capital to work, study or other tasks daily." In theory yes but whi will be able to afford the fares? The poor will opt for the cheapest option (bus) The rich will continue to use their cars - after all SD to Santiago is only 2.5 hours + you need to get to your final destination, Feight train probably is a good idea but the subsidies required for the passenger train will be huge.
“What’s advantageous about this train is that we’ve traced it as the key center of gravity for the Dominican economy’s productivity and development.”
Then why didn't you build this one First?
This project has promise, regardless of the politics.
Wow Really ?? Am I reading this right?? North South train??
Ricardolito
East West. Meaning to La Romana, Punta Cana even to Barahona
I see it very strange that the North South would not go to Pueto Plata?? It would reopen it to internal tourism from SD, even live in Santiago work in Pueto Plata or other way around..
"I wonder when this is projected to begin construction and where they'll garner and attract the one Billion from "the private sector"...!?"
Felix Bautista?
RonEvane,
Kudos for your post, one of few that shows good intellect, not biased by political color.
EDUCATION first and the rest will follow!

EDUCATION, pardon the pun, is the LOCOMOTIVE that has Pulled and Pushed the successful Economic Development Train of humanity since the beginning of time.
To dispute that is like disputing Newton’s Law of Gravity!
You're right, only even intellectuals have to move around.
Also, I'd feel a whole lot safer in the uneducated sat on a train instead of driving jalopies at 45km/h in the left traffic lane with no lights on at night.

That''s simply not true. Freight trains are a very important component of how goods are moved here within the United States. And people...
If you look into it most countries are expanding their rail networks... China for one... Australia is looking into high speed rail like Europe and Asia. DR needs to link all it's major cities and move towards a culture of train travel between cites and goods freight trains to remove a lot of trucks from the roads as well..
Far to long has this been needed......
stillhere,
You are correct railways for many different reasons will be the mass mover of freight and people in the future once again; it’s kind of back to the future.
Warren Buffet and Berkshire Hathaway have been buying Train companies like mad recently.
Yes but this is were JoseJose's post holds merit...most passenger train systems are indeed subsidized by local government.
washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/23/AR2009082302037.html
@ Stillhere.
Also, rail has the added advantage of running on electricity and/or Biodiesel!..
It can save billions on petrol products not bought and wasted. The billions spent today on Chavez's oil can instead be redirected into more infrastructure and improvements of existing ones, (such as education!).
It will also help kill the dreaded truckers' union. They are a menace to society and economy and must be stopped!
The benefits of the railroad are too numerous to be detailed and specified. We need this rail service pronto!...Perhaps we can borrow the money from the education fund??
"Perhaps we can borrow the money from the education fund??"
Steal you mean, that's a PURPLE GIVEN!
Nothing will stop the progress!
PLD is the only way so we can get a better future..
It takes a visionary to do that..
Go ahead Danilo..Your country support your wisdom!
Has Danilo learned to tie his shoes on his own yet?
"Yes but this is were JoseJose's post holds merit...most passenger train systems are indeed subsidized by local government."
Yes, but our govt. also subsidizes diesel and LPG. This has to be bought from outside with real Dollars that can otherwise be retained and spent in DR in the form of workers' salaries and more infrastructure!
The boys at Odebrecht are rubbing their palms together.
I'd love to know who their connection is.
And if we have advanced this far with the PLD, imagine how much further we could have advanced with good government, good leadership, and honest politicians.
We can only dream about the possibilities, Juan!.....But you know, nothing stays the same... The only constant is change, it is said!...And change WILL happen, guaranteed!
Our govt will either get better or worse. I'm hoping for the better with Medina, but appearances can be deceiving.
He said that administrative corruption is a cancer that has metastasized.
continued:
Mejia said he would fight the wasteful spending that has the Dominican Republic in 142nd place of 142 countries in the wasteful spending category in the World Economic Forum global competitiveness report. He criticized the way in which the government payroll has ballooned, describing it as "a sterile bureaucracy".
He criticized the fact that government resources are used to employ 334 deputy ministers, with 37 vice consuls in New York alone, and that there are vice consuls who do not even live in the areas where they are appointed. He pledged austerity in his new government. Mejia, speaking at the televised talk hosted by the Corripio media group on TeleAntillas (Channel 2) and TeleSistema (Channel 11), said that he would give priority to agriculture, education, public health, production, and making available credit to productive sectors.
continued:
He expressed his support for the small and medium-sized business sector, saying that they are the backbone of the country's development, welfare and social and economic stability. He said education was the basic priority of his government, because without education there are no possibilities for progress. He said health would be his second priority, and recalled that it was during his government that the present social security bill was approved. He criticized the fact that the country now depends on imports, for many items that the country should be purchasing from local farmers. "I continue with my ties to the farm and because I am from that sector, I am sure there are extraordinary opportunities in agriculture," he said, as reported in Hoy.
continued:
He announced that he would conduct a fiscal reform to improve the efficiency of the state.
Mejia added that he would sign an agreement with the IMF and stressed that construction would be a major area for his government, on the basis that construction stimulates the economy.

Continued:
He comments he was also critical of the Nizaito channel during the Balaguer administration and the Parque del Este sports installations during the Hipolito Mejia administration, as mega projects that have failed.

Airgordo, perhaps you may not be seeing the whole picture.
Let me explain;
It is entirely within reason to assume that a rail line to El Cibao, can help develop all sorts of industry, and further stimulate and accelerate agribusiness by facilitating export, thereby earning the money necessary to..
.... to take care of your dental problems.
A person can spend money on immediate needs or save it for future investments…. Again, what would you do?

Folks this group that is constantly SPAMNG DT, netetrader.com, has contact email listed as ioffershoe@gmail.com.
I think we should all write them an email expressing our displeasure with their advertising tactic.
If they want to advertise fine, just contact DT and pay for it!
A lot less than the retainer you charge Felix Bautista!

Totally agree!..We need power plants as much as we need a modern transport system!

THERE are ways to move the cargo, how do you think it moves TODAY without a train? we need a lot of stuff BEFORE a 1.8 B train
@airgordo
No its about 12 years of the PLD giving support to everything but what the Dominican people really need!

1- From the moment you mention USA or EUROPE, you just lost completely the sight, WE ARE ON DR, there is NO Cholera on USA or EUROPE for God's sake, the PRIMARY NEEDS of those people have been RESOLVED A LONG TIME AGO!!! OURS are THERE alive and WELL!!!
Ms. Vickey you must enjoy being slapped around by airgordo.
