Santo Domingo.-  To mark International Labor Day dozens of workers rallied in front of Congress Tuesday to protest against alleged intentions to strip the severance pay from the Labor Code.

The demonstrators denounced that employers curtain their right to unionize within the workplace.

Luz Eneida Mejía, of the Independent Workers Movement, said as the result of neoliberal reforms implemented in the country, several sectors seek to limit the working-class’ rights acquired during decades of struggle.

“We are not going to allow the industrialists to strip us of the rights which we were so difficult to reach,” she said.

what a lot of nonsense ,,,the severance pay is not under any danger,,,they just looked for an issue to justify their actions which have not the slightest chance of influencing anyone .
Having said that , the severance pay is very fair when an employee is dismissed but not fair when they simply stop coming to work and then have the right to many weeks of pay ..An employee even has the right to substantial severance pay when the employee is justly dismissed for stealing , just as an example

Abolishing the ridiculous mandatory "severance pay" clause from the labor code would be a good start to economic growth in the Dominican Republic.

The Costs to business and Government services is immeasurable but extremely negative.
