SANTO DOMINGO. - Dominican Republic consolidates its status as a rice exporter, supplying 80,000 metric tons to the international market this year, and hailed by entities abroad including the US Department of Agriculture.

The USDOA’s latest report on February said rice imports fell and the country has become self-sufficient in the grain’s production.

In its most recent meeting the National Rice Commission (CONA) authorized the export of 40,000 metric tons of rice, in addition to the 40,000 recently sent abroad.

With CONA’s measure the country would export 80,000 tons of rice in 2012, and caps record crops during the last seven years. It also approved to expand the rice reserve to 4,000 metric tons.

Josean, haven't you have anything positive to say about this country, those exporters are not government employees, they are private sector including many PRD party members. You generalise everything. What is wrong with you, next thing we know is that you will be supporting General Candelier Idea of Romper a cualquiera si no ganan. Bunch low life criminals.

Wonderful news and quite expected when you can see that the rice industry has been modernised here .. My neighbour who sells machinary to the primary producers has been doing very well over the past 3 years and the growers have benefitted from the loans they took out at cheap interest rates from the government and which Mejia has told to dishonour

josean,
So far as I know, the Metro does not produce any rice, and was not constructed for that purpose. According the the article, the country is now self-sufficient in rice, which is an important achievement, given that rice is a staple food for Dominicans.

However the country is a long way from having adequate, safe and reliable public transport, so investing in the Metro is a good idea, I would have thought.

If we have this “super bountiful harvest” of rice why haven't the Dominican consumers seen a significantly proportional reduction in price?

i would like to know just who is buying this rice. here is a piece of corrrespondence that i received from a consortium in Jamaica, which had some interest in buying a large quantiry, and for whom i got some quotations.........

We may have a slight problem here. The good quality rice sold at say Pricesmart in Kingston is sold retail at J$40.00 per pound. Your rice would work out at J$40.47 FOB Dom Rep. Add shipping, handling at port, transportation, storage, wholesaler's profit and retailer's profit and of course our commission and we are in some serious shit.

In doing some research, Thai long grained rice is being sold for J$22.90 per lb, the USDA world market prices for long grain rice is the equivalent of J$27.88 so rice at J$40.47 for export would be a challenging price.

Let me know what you think

that was a letter to me from the prospective buyer. so, i would love to know who is buying this stuff.

josean,
I don't know of any public transport system anywhere in the world, that serves an entire county. It is done with a combination of systems, and the Santo Domingo Metro is a good start. For reasons I have outlined earlier, I believe an underground rail network is entirely appropriate for this capital. Maybe if it were not a PLD initiative you would see it differently?

lovely to see a few others laying into Josean and his totally negative , non-constructive, often totally off subject remarks......... Keep up the good work. These forums are intended for pro-active, constructive, factual discussions. Not ridiculous, abusive, off subject comments.

derek,
I hope you are not including me in the group "laying into" Josean. I disagree with him totally about the Metro, but I don't have to live here, so I'm just throwing in my 2-bobs worth. I do wish he could overcome his tunnel-vision on this (no pun intended) since he is generally well researched and has a lot to offer in general.

That is good to hear. I believe the DR can do even better in agriculture. The prices of food is increasing and many countries cannot produce enough to supply their growing populations. The DR can create more jobs by creating a path to growth and export difference types of produce. Not just rice.

Another PLD Screw Up!

Business does not want more FTAs

"The huge US$3.19 billion trade deficit with the US through DR-CAFTA has apparently deterred Dominican business from supporting similar agreements with Canada, Mexico and Haiti, according to Diario Libre.

This opinion is also echoed in the Tuesday, 1 May edition of Hoy newspaper.

Diario Libre quotes the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Manuel Garcia Arevalo, as saying that 78% of the deficit is from products that are not made in the Dominican Republic: oil, machinery, vehicles, cereals and plastic parts. Despite the fact that these imports did not have a negative effect on Dominican production, the business community does not seem anxious to conclude similar free trade agreements with Mexico, Canada or Haiti. In 2011, only Costa Rica and Nicaragua had positive trade balances with the United States under the CAFTA agreement."

Gee, I wonder if Costa Rica and Nicaragua have METROS?

Ligia Bonetti, the president of the Industrial Association of the Dominican Republic (AIRD) told reporters that she does not understand why people with ties to the government are trying to continue signing these sorts of agreements without any changes in the internal conditions.

These conditions make Dominican industrial output uncompetitive on international markets.

"He is generally" is perhaps too loose of a term to use regarding Josean, Roy. Has Josean any idea about the topography of say San Jose, Costa Rica?

Dread, I'm also curious to know who's buying DR rice, that they can get cheaper from the source used by Pricesmart in Kingston!?....Not a rhetorical question.
Do you know who else sells rice, cheaper than DR, in the Americas?
