Santo Domingo.- The country has become very attractive for Colombian investments becoming a major destination for capital from that nation, according to the latest report of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal) for 2012.

It lists the US$23.5 million acquisition of the insurance underwriter ProSeguros in 2011 by the Colombian Sura Group; Bon Ice cream by Nutresa, and investments by Argus Cement, including the production of clinker.

Venezuela investments have also been coming for years, including banks, resorts, commercial buildings, the Dominican Refinery among other businesses.

Cepal said Venezuelan investments in the country have skyrocketed from less than US$5 million in 2005 to US$140.4 million in 2010.

Moreover a recent Export and Investment Center (CEI-RD) report notes that the Velutini Group spent US$100.0 million to build Santo Domingo’s Blue Mall, and US$60.0 million for a similar shopping center at the resort region Punta Cana. It said Velutini also plans 534 rooms spread among villas and apartments at Punta Cana, at a cost of US$110.0 million.

The Venezuelan Cisneros Group announced a US$2.0 billion investment in a tourism project in September 2009, whereas in 2008 the Cohén Group started construction of the Sambil Center Santo Domingo, on 63,000 square meters, at a cost of more than US$200.0 million.

I LOVE to hear stories like that.. meanwhile there are a couple people very negative about dominican future, so many others worlwide see a bright future for dominican Republic..

I think that we have the economic and political stability for a success in international investment

That's why we 're atracting more and more foreign capital!

Thanks God!

All good indicators that DR is moving on the right path. If things were truly so bad, why invest money in DR?

Over to you.

Some people simply derive great pleasure to see others fail, love to foresee doom and gloom. It is like a sort of mental maturbation. Nevertheless, the saying is very true misery loves company. But it aint gonna find it here.

A bit misleading here....nothing has been built by them in Punta Cana. They had signs up for about 6 months and now everything is taken down...just an empty lot.

If Narco- Danilo won this election, then George Bush also won fair and square in 2000 and it didn't have to be decided in Republican Dominate Supreme Court 5 to 4 in Bush v. Gore!

We can not deny there is narco money floating within the Dominican economy, however the vast majority of foreign investments are legit. It is clearly obvious that as a consequence of an unstable political climate in Venezuela the DR has become a beneficiary of capital flight.

Capital markets are averse to risk and become jittery at the onset of uncertainty and will quickly resort to the movement of money from one investment to another more viable one in search of safety, greater stability and/or increased returns.

How do you know that?

So DR is more Stable than the US?

Wall Street must be shaking in their wing tipped shoes!

Only if the money is not legitimate will it go to a place like DR versus the USA!

Given your erudite dissertation on the international flight of capital we should be Switzerland by Christmas!

Hey it's the Miami 80s in DR now with all the narc money pouring in from you know where. No doubt it's happening all over again, all they have to do is trace the money back to the owners.

Also DR dose not have to deal with any guerrilla issues like South America and the US doesn't spend time focusing on DR. So it works out perfect for the South Americans as long as a finders fee is paid to the higher ups who are really running DR.
