Santo Domingo.- The country’s banana production totaled US$198.0 million in 2010 when it sold 303,000 tons abroad, 95% of which was exported to the European Union (EU).

EU ambassador Irene Horejs provided the figure yesterday and noted that the country’s banana sector benefits more than 300,000 people directly or directly.

In a statement, the diplomat said the United States, Japan and the Antilles acquire the other five percent of the local production of bananas. “The Dominican banana industry has exhibited an enormous dynamism in the last few decades.”

Quoted by the Corripio Communications Group, Horejs said Dominican Republic’s incorporation to the Lome IV Agreement gave the country preferential access to the European market, which she affirms has sparked a growth in exports from 2000 to 2010, at an annual average rate of 16%.

She added that the UE’s customs fee was 176 euros per ton of banana before the tariff was lifted, and is now 148 euros.

Some, with less of an understanding of world commerce, would say this report is just another ploy by Leonel to boost his party's image and garner more votes!

The banana industry has been threatened by the "cigatoga" parasite and has suffered a decline in total production.
This pathogen can be eradicated with more defined methods of planting genetically resistant offshoots that at first don't produce much of a crop, but the eventual eradication, is worth the time and temporary loss in production... Science always has an answer!

The object is to gain a foothold in the foreign markets to bring in a reliable revenue. The dotted line advantage of this is to bring your identity into the world marketplace to reap the benefits of foreign interest into the production of bananas. Some of this new interest would involve exposure to new farming technologies, financing, and marketing. You have to let the world know you are here so they can open the door to new opportunities.

This surprises me because I am regrettably in London more frequently than I would wish and I only see the bananas from west africa and never guineo from the DR or the platano verde which the dominicans love ,
Some one explained here last year that the variety of banana had changed in the DR ,,I do not think they last very long once they are even just a little ripe but the variety from West africa lasts much longer and of course do not have the discolouration that we always see here in the DR

this does not mean that 198 million was sold abroad. that is the value of the crop. 300,000 tons was sold abroad. we have no data on where it was sent, and what was the price, and how much of it was accepted, and rejected. so, all in all , the article means SQUAT.
