Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s Industries Association (AIRD) Thursday said it’s alarmed by the manner in which some city councils harm the country’s national production, tourism and legal security in the last few years, by charging fees to regional commerce, which in their view violates the Constitution.
AIRD spokeswoman Ligia Bonetti de Valiente spoke out against a recent resolution by the Veron Municipal District City Council, Altagracia province, to charge trucks which use its roads, which she affirms will increase costs for companies and places the creation of jobs at risk.
“this type of unconstitutional fees seeks to collect taxes to cigar and mattress factories or repair shops, concrete and cement makers, builders, wood shops, blocks and door factories, welders, printers, tailors, glass shops, etc., most of which are small industries that create formal jobs, and bear heavy loads in terms of costs and that now is tried to drown them even more with the Verón city council measure,” Bonetti said in a statement.

These taxes are part of doing business and should be carried over to the trucks using these roads.
Now the unfortunate part is that these revenues never go to where they were collected for in the first place.
Lie-onel is the First Constitutional Violator for the last 8 years by not funding EDUCATION at the Legally Mandated 4% and nobody has done anything to hold him accountable!
So why should others respect the constitution the president violates although he swore he would defend and uphold it!
The eastern part of the country, Veron, Punta Cana, Bavaro, Macao, Uvero Alto all pay a disproportionate amount of money for services vs the rest of the country. It is one of the reasons why a great amount of the tourist industry workers are bused into the tourist zone from Higuey as they cannot afford the housing and food costs associated with the tourist zone. It is cheaper for them to reside in Higuey. Merchants in the tourist zone charge higher rates because they complain transportation costs for materials and personnel are high and they have to pass on the cost to the consumer. Yet, cities north and west of Santo Domingo (hub of supplies and service), of similar distance of the Punta Cana - Santo Domingo transit have lower prices.
The municipality of Veron fee venture is entering a neverland that will increase already high costs associated with the zone. It will discourage investment and will draw the ire of the transportation sindicates and the public.

Do you have verifiable statistics to back that up?
My observations would be exactly opposite as S.D. funds the rest of the Country
You always wrong on everything, why would this be an exception Alpha!
Anthony C. It is not a question as who funds who, it is about what people pay for materials and services in the east vs other sectors of the country. It is a tourist zone and I live there and I have first hand knowledge of the price disparities. The "tourist zone" label suggests to the merchants they can charge higher prices whether they are justified or not, because it implies to them, Open Season, there is a greater availability of wealth to be gained from the vibrant economic zone. Transportation costs of material and passengers into and out of the area is costly and the merchants use it as an excuse to charge high prices. The illegal decision by the Veron municipal council to charge transportation fees only aggrevates the economic viability of the area.
A mirror, 72' x 24", RD $ 3000 in Punta Cana, in Higuey RD$ 800; A month supply of blood pressure pills in Bavaro, RD $ 850, in Higuey RD $ 150; 1 qt white paint in Macao RD $325, in Santo Domingo RD $ 190 .
