Santo Domingo.- Remittances to the Dominican Republic topped US$3.3 billion in 2011, or 7.7 percent more than 2010, according to an Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) study, Efe reports.
The report by the IDB’s Multilateral Investments Fund of (Fomin) found that the Caribbean country ranks fifth place among countries with the most remittances received during that period.
Mexico heads the list of Latin America countries with US$22.7 billion, followed by Guatemala, 4.4; Colombia, 4.2 and El Salvador, 3.65 billion. "In countries such as Dominican Republic," notes the study authored by Inter-American Dialogue researcher Manuel Orozco. "Remittances can reach up to 5 percent of the Gross Domestic Product."
