Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic can be more aggressive in exports and must also exported large quantities, be innovative and  varied in its products, and use society’s skills to improve the quality of trade.

Former Costa Rica Foreign Commerce minister Alberto Trejos made the statement in the conference "Strategies to internationalize business and taking advantage of free trade" staged Wednesday in the launch of the first Dominican International Trade Center (CIDA), in the hotel El Embajador.

Trejos said an intelligent insertion in the foreign market makes exports the main engine for growth, creates jobs, income and attract currencies, and is the vehicle for the country’s diversification.

The business leader also stressed that for a more advantageous trade the country must sell not just farm products but also technological and medical services, which in his view attracts good investment as a mechanism of transformation.

He said Dominican Republic could advance from textiles and light manufacturing to the most sought after products with scientific and technological content in which there’s human capital and a better business climate.

First you must have something to export other than drugs then the market would increase.
Secondly the Dominican government will stifel any business with its give me propina attitude so as to acelerate exports.

Until these nimrods in power have an inkeling of business accunum the DR will never increase its exports.

Interesting that a Costa Rican is talking about how DR is way under-performing when it comes to its export potential. Just goes to show you that there are valuable and sustainable mechanisms to see through a higher and richer value added export basis for the DR IF--IF--IF the leadership in the State and Nation are willing to commit to a core program and sustain it for a good length of time.

Getting a handle on injecting more export growth into the economy is key to development. Some advancement has been made, but we still need more and better management. The legal institutions need to be strengthened and the Registry Property System made efficient and transparent. The international environment does not lend itself to stragglers and half-timers. Your country either adopts and adheres to modernity or pays the price for its in maturities.

No doubt the Dominican Republic holds great promise to become a great country. Expanding export capacities and diversifying the economy, both domestically and for export, are critical. To be sure, without government support, little is likely to be accomplished. Either the government surrenders its consolidation of controlling wealth (through various tactics, including or graft) or it steps aside and allows entrepreneurs to function freely. What is really needed (as Atabey pointed out) is for leadership. This would be bolstered in the country if all of the intelligent Dominicans didn't leave abroad at their first opportunity and instead participated/contributed to robust and revolutionary growth.
