Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) CEO Osmar Benitez on Sunday criticized the Agriculture Ministry’s payroll of 17,000 in a country which exports only US$800.0 million per year, while Chile’s par employees just 1,500, but whose exports exceed US$10.0 billion annually. He  said Chile has only one deputy Agriculture minister, whose function is to replace the incumbent, compard with Dominican Republic’s 39, some even without an assigned office.

Agro investment

Benitez  said the government budget should be reoriented toward spending in the rural areas, to reach farm production. He said that, according to a study of

He said of the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) total funding for agriculture, 70% goes to payroll and other bureaucratic costs, with only 30% for investment.Benitez noted that Agriculture Ministry agronomists don’t even visit farms and instead work for  agrochemical dealers selling their products.

As an example the business leader cited that there’s an Agriculture office around half a mile from his farm,  but he has never seen the area’s representative."The truth is that there’s a need to do what’s never been done," Benitez said, paraphrasing president elect Danilo Medina’s campaing slogan.

This payroll is about 90% botellas who have to report to no one or no place. Whereas there are thousands of teachers who are underpaid in underfunded schools and they have to report.

What can one say about this??

And some wonder why "Trade deficit bared: 3 of every 4 containers leave Dom. Rep. empty"
or "Chamber of Accounts report lists irregularities"
or "World Bank rep’s parting shot: Dominicans rebuke yet accept corruption"
and mock claims like "Dominican Republic, a developed country by 2025"

A friend campaigned very heavily for Danilo. After the election he confided to me that he was getting a job related to agriculture and that he was told that he had almost 200 jobs that he could give to the party loyal. He thought that he would have a problem filling about 25% or them, because those were the jobs which required work.

that, my friends, explains , in part, the fact that GDP is growing. government expenditure causes GDP to grow. maybe Atabey can weigh in on this, and enlighten us all as to the benefits of growth such as this.

This is nothing new, the same thing happens in all sectors. I am glad that Benitez made the comparison between our Agribusiness and Chile's. Just imagine if all the money payed in the form of the famous "botellas" was utilized to further develop our industry. How can a country move forward when things like this are allowed to take place? It is just as bad with the PRD as well, the dominican people are orphans in that sense, we don't have a government who looks after the wellbeing of our nation.

And yet i can't comprehend how some people blindly defend and praise the actual government. I love my country way too much to support such behavior. It’s the country where my parents are from and where my ancestors lived and where one day hopefully I can go back and live the rest of my days.

hernandez5482,

"I love my country way too much to support such behavior. "

Now there is a statement that I can hold with such high regard. Well said...

My only wish would be to see more Dominicans be so proud, humble and know when to call it the exactly way everyone can clearly see it...

You don't feel that anything should be done about this???

Yes we all know Hippo was a crap president ...8 years ago.. move on... see whats going on now... it ain't all sunshine and lolly pops in the land of broken promises, missed opportunities and unrealized potential going to waste...

Or should it say ..

This is what pisses you off upon reading the magnitude of corruption in a lazzy and illiterate

country such as ours. Again this is a constructive critisism, not like some one mentioned once

before "(anti-Dominican)".

We can't come close to Chile's educational standards so we rather immitate corruption at its

best. I would not be supprice if LF is off to Rio to depossit the stollen loot before his term is up.

With all the accumulated kick back (DR Commission) biddng Brazil got awarded to, for every

large scale construction, such as the Metro. I would say the same thing about H Megia, had he

been in LF's shoes .

Why can't we have a responsable, honest gvt just on salary. This applies to the entire gvt

functionaries, includding the entire Congress and staff , subsidiaries & chambers? Also to

the Military and Police if you want to call it that?
