Santo Domingo.- While a CDN-TV poll found that most people won’t withstand more taxes, Dominican Republic Industries Association (AIRD) on Monday said it agrees with a new comprehensive tax reform, since in its view could make local producers more competitive.

AIRD president Ligia Bonetti de Valiente said the local economy needs to be organized, employment boosted and informal businesses regulated.

"I think we have the ability to work effectively, both in spending and in revenue and try to bring transparency to the entire tax system so that many more pay, what’s been said about the issue of formalizing the economy if fair."

She said most jobs last year were informal, and as such didn’t pay taxes. "We want a tax structure that allows the economy to feel motivated to go to the formal side, it’s the only way we’ll achieve quality employment, and a better quality of life for Dominicans."

Meanwhile workers polled by CDN affirm that big corporations, especially those linked to tourism don’t pay taxes, and agree with a reform to include all sectors.

The people would go along with tax reform if it meant no new taxes. They would enjoy a transparent system of tax revenue distribution that would go into projects and services that would benefit the people directly rather than be used to line the pockets of overpaid government officials and botellas.

Why pay taxes if you don't benefit from them.

@Josean

" out of Brooklyn"

Josean proves once again he's just another dumb haitian with that rhetoric. The differences between haitians in Dr and Dominican in NYC or the rest of US, is that most if not all are legal and/ or have contributed a lot more to society without overflowing the US with massive poverty and having 20kids per day, see the differences?

Formalizing the business environment and having all or as many as possible contribute their share of the resources is essential to getting enough taxable resources for the challenges of providing FULL DAY K-12 Education and the rest of the social obligations of a modern nation-state. Yes, by all means cutting red tape and "botellas" as well as inflated public salaries are also needed. But simply put, DR has UNDER-INVESTED in its infrastructure and schools. The evidence is all so clear and needs serious attention.

Investment (% of GDP) for Emerging and Developing Economies in year 2010 is 31.09 %.

D Republic in year 2010 .....16.476 %.

Costa Rica. in year 2010....... 19.96 %.
Colombia-in year 2010 .......... 22.369 %.
Mexico.. in year 2010 .............. 25.656 %.
Chile in year 2010 ................... 26.294 %.
Panama in year 2010 ............. 27.5 %.

Investment (% of GDP) for Jamaica in year 2010 is 14.57 %.

Notice anything interesting?

Historically, DR has reinvested a much lower amount of its GDP than, for instance, Costa Rica and many other far better managed nation-states. If DR wants to reach its potential, it will need to find the courage and good management practices to see through far higher Investment (% of GDP). For its emerging economic status, a range of 20-25% should do the trick. But getting there will be the Challeng

Dominican Fugitive Wanted in Brutal Robbery Returned To Rockland From Dominican Republic
A fugitive who was the getaway driver in a brutal 2006 robbery of a Sloatsburg couple at their home has been captured at his hideout in the Dominican Republic and brought back to Rockland County, where he still faces prosecution on drug charges.

Jose A. Martinez, 24, is part of a group of four men who the Rockland County District Attorney's Office says followed a man and his wife to their home on Nov. 18, 2006, attacked them and were able to get away even though they were stopped a short time later by a police officer for speeding.
