Pedernales, Dominican Republic.- The power company EGE Haina on Wednesday announced a US$100.0 million investment in the second stage of the Los Cocos wind farm, which will add 52 megawatts to the grid when it starts generation later this year.

Los Cocos currently generates 26 MW and is expected to reach 77 by yearend.

EGE Haina CEO Tito Sanjurjo started the first of 26 turbines which are arriving at nearby Cabo Rojo port and will be trucked to the park located at Juancho, where together with the 14 are already installed will total 40, and which takes its investments in the country to more than US$ 400 million.

National Energy Commission president Enrique Ramirez, who accompanied Sanjurjo, said Los Cocos is a new step in the country’s wind energy development, with 85MW entering the grid by yearend.

He said the country has the Caribbean's biggest wind power system and third in Central America behind Costa Rica and Honduras, with up to 1,300 MW and “incalculable” wind and solar energy potential.

“incalculable” wind and solar energy potential." A bit of hyperbole?

Atabey;

It is kind of confusing, does the editor mean DR is generating 1300MW of wind power of energy or

Central America is generating that much combined? If that is the case DR wind power energy is

half its combined total energy output generated at any given point. So what he is saying is that we

have 867 turbines at 1.5 MW@ if it is Spaniard or 5MW @ if it is German for a total of 260 turbines.

Someone is giving us erratic info. Total cost of turbines needed to generate 1300 MW ? How

many turbines could we get for US$400 millions dollars? If that is the case we should have

enough power for no more black outs . According to him if we are getting 40 turbines for $400,

then some one is getting some kick-back,more than the cost per airplane bought from Brazil.
