Santo Domingo.- After hearing the statements for three hours by State-owned electric utility (CDEEE) CEO Celso Marranzini, the Congress committee which studies the bill for a US$500 million bond for the energy subsidy agreed to render a favorable report for approval.
Committee chair senator Dionis Sanchez said either the rate, or the bond increases or the plants get shut off.
The favorable report would spur quick approval of the legislation.
Before the meeting Marranzini said he has managed to save RD$101.9 billion in the sector, with changes to the fuel base, by cutting overhead and administrative cost, increased collections, among others.
"In conclusion this effort by many people has allowed the country to have saved and received US$1.9 billion in just three years, and adding that to the US$700 million which was possible to get through compliance with the sector, the contribution has been US$2.6 billion which taken to pesos total RD$101.9 billion," Marranzini said.

"he has managed to save RD$101.9 billion in the sector" = It is just words on paper, sort of going to a big sale, 30% off at the local department store. You really don't save because you still have to separate your money from your pockets to pay for a product/service aleady overpriced.
If the state-owned utilities really want to save, they have to go after those who steal power. The consumers who have faithfully paid their electric bills over the years in effect have paid a high tariff to offset the losses caused by those who steal. It is about time the faithful get relief.
