SANTO DOMINGO.- Poultry producers today warned it’s impossible to sell chicken meat doe less than 50 pesos a pound, arguing rising costs and ever expanding intermediaries, and rebuked Consumer Protection Agency director Altagracia Paulino’ call on Wednesday for its boycott .

"I'm outraged. This woman Altagracia Paulino has poked a hornet’s nest she herself doesn’t know how to get out of. We cannot sell for less than that because we’ll disappear," said Ambiorix Cabrera, president of the Licey and Moca poultry producers.

He called "irresponsible" Paulino’s call to boycott chicken to force lower prices as distributors proposed and the government’s threat of allowing the meat’s import. "It’s irresponsible to make such a call. There’s to sell chicken for less than 50 pesos."

He added that even with imports the price of chicken would remain the same because in his view the middlemen are the same and also the fact that the government doesn’t have the logistics to sell it.

“His attorneys claim political persecution because he supported Hipólito Mejía”

“Anthony Santos’s attorneys, Carlos Barcacel and Carlos Olivares described the arrest of the artist as political persecution, claiming that it is related to the last electoral process in the Northwest line where Mr. Santos supported the former presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia, of the Dominican Revolutionary Party.”

Sounds like a big joke.Of course the middleman is making money. I do know the colmados are making barely anything off chicken these days but someone definitely is the way prices keep going up.

Maybe it is time to eliminate these "middle men".

I think most people buy chickens at the supermercados and may be to a lesser extent in the markets .At present there is not many imported chicken meat , the price has nothing to do with speculation or with wall street and the simple fact is that chicken producers need to make a profit as do the shops ..I agree that Senora Paulina is blowing hot air and no one will take any notice of her .

How much of the chicken feed or the what it is made from is imported?
As the contents of that feed is made from staples, that are the most speculated on...

Just a question.. anyone know? As it may help answer why prices are still going up.

I am against price controls and I am against import quotas as well.

Let the free market decide what the real cost of poultry is.

"Let the free market decide what the real cost of poultry is."

Yes the "free market".... like an oxymoron..... Only if it were free and a word to add is "fair" ... when countries heavily subsidizer certain crops they can export a lower prices than other counties can produce for, forcing local producer out of business... Maybe it should be called a "free for all" for countries that subsidize to monopolize food production.

It hardly a "free market" as most of us know.....

gmiller, no there is not. The only solution, it is a free market after all, is DO NOT buy chicken. Just stop buying it. Who says you have to eat chicken every day?
She traders responsible for raising the prices will have to lower them, as the colmados, markets, and even supermarkets will stop buying.

ELPAPA999, asks

"Does anybody know why we are no long able to rate each other comments????"

It's because some readers believe they have a right, indeed a duty, to eliminate comments they don't like, by registering and using multiple usernames. Acknowledging problems and attempting to fix them takes an effort. It's much easier to shoot the messenger.

Anyway you can still rate a comment, just not anonymously.

Does anybody know why some people finish a question with more than one question-mark????
